The Poor People’s Campaign is a continuation of the work that Dr. Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference started in 1967. Rev. Dr. King said what good is it to desegregate lunch counters when people can’t afford to buy their lunch? Rev. Dr. King and the multi-ethnic coalition of leaders from the Puerto Rican movement, the Mexican American Movement, the movement of poor Whites in Appalachia and the American Indian movement wanted to hold the federal government accountable to solve the problem of poverty and inequality.

Still today, poverty kills people every day in the richest country ever to exist.

Hosted by the Laney Poor People’s Campaign and co-sponsored by Associated Students of Laney College, Umoja-UBAKA, Puente, the Latinx Center, the Women’s Economic Agenda Project and the California Poor People’s Campaign.

Speakers include:
Member of the unhoused community being evicted from Wood St.
Homeless Laney students
Moms 4 Housing
Mike Hutchinson (Oakland School Board member who helped reverse planned school closings)
UC Graduate student who participated in labor strike to afford housing
Members of the Poor People’s Campaign
And more!
