As the final stretch of the Spring 2024 semester approaches and we prepare for the frenzy that accompanies term paper deadlines, final exams, transcript requests, and graduation planning, I want to share with you the experiences that two students recently shared with me. Their stories serve as an inspiring reminder of the important work that we do and the impact we have on the lives of the students we serve.

The Berkeley City College Basic Needs Awareness Week ran from April 15 through April 18. BCC’s Basic Needs Center hosted a series of events providing information and basic needs resources available to all Berkeley City College students.

Merritt College Puente Honors Cesar Chavez

On Wednesday, April 3rd, the Merritt College Puente Program organized a special cultural event to celebrate the legacy of the labor rights icon, Cesar Chavez. The event opened with a heartfelt land acknowledgment, followed by an Aztec dance to acknowledge the four directions.

Laney CalWORKs

The Laney CalWORKs office has been busy advancing our mission of providing opportunities for our students. Early last year, the CalWORKs Association received a large grant from Blue Shield of California to provide training and coaching for students to partake in redesigning policy that affects CalWORKs families across the state. We call these students SPARC (Student Parents Reimagining CalWORKs).

Laney Women’s Basketball Garners Awards, Competes in Elite 8 CCAAA Playoffs

With integrity-filled spirit, effort, and toughness reminiscent of the “My Team’s on the Floor!” moment in the classic movie Hoosiers, the Laney College, the six-member Laney College Women’s Basketball team played its collective heart out before falling to Moorpark College by a mere 3 points in the quarterfinal portion of the women’s state basketball championship for California community colleges.
