Peralta faculty brought two resolutions to the 2024 Fall Plenary Session of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, Nov. 6-9 in Visalia. Both resolutions—one urging increased support for Early Childhood Education programs and another calling for UCs to accept articulation of ESOL oral communication classes—passed overwhelmingly and thereby "set direction for the [state senate] as a whole."
ALAMEDA, Calif., September 13, 2024 – The College of Alameda (CoA) is thrilled to confirm the appointment of NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton as the new men’s basketball head coach. Payton’s storied career and commitment to excellence make him an ideal fit to lead the Cougars basketball program.
On August 15, 2024, Peralta Community College District employees (and at least one student!) gathered at Laney College for a dynamic and engaging Flex Day focused on professional development. Organized by district-wide Professional Development Co-Coordinators Chelsea Cohen and Marla Leech (both Laney College faculty members), the event was a resounding success, bringing together educators from across the district to enhance their skills, particularly with regards to Artificial Intelligence (AI), and collaborate on maximizing student success in the upcoming semester.

As we prepare to kick off another new academic year, I'm reminded of the strength of our district community in advancing social and economic transformation for students and the community by the ingenuity, agency, individual and collective commitment of our faculty, classified professionals, and administrators. It often involves more than just the day-to-day duties; it involves finding innovative, practical, and helpful ways to improve our work.

The Peralta Colleges are home to many extraordinary individuals who consistently exceed expectations in their service to students, employees, and the community. The whimsically named "Flying Pig Awards" were established to celebrate such achievements – those that defy expectations and embody the true spirit of Peralta.
Congratulations to Jamille Teer, who has just been elected to serve on the California Community Colleges Classified Senate (4CS) Board of Directors.
On April 25th, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson hosted a workshop attended by over 50 stakeholders across the district involved in the contract process, including classified professionals, faculty, administrators, and outside legal counsel.
In Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, Bell Hooks wrote, “The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy.” It is this intention and the influence of teachers, thinkers, and writers like Hooks that led the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) Executive Committee to select the theme for this session, "Radicalizing Spaces of Possibility: Faculty Leadership in Vision 2030".
Congratulations to Program Director Ben Nelson, faculty members Elizabeth Boegel and Brad Balukjian, and the entire Merritt College Natural History and Sustainability program, who recently received recognition from the U.S. Congress and a John Muir Award for Environmental Education Advocacy.
