College of Alameda (COA) hosted the “Education: Becoming a Lifelong Learner” symposium on Friday, March 8, 2024. Sponsored by the Alameda Chamber and Economic Alliance, this event featured a dynamic lineup of speakers dedicated to providing lifelong learning opportunities. Coinciding with International Women's Day, the symposium featured a keynote address by COA alumna and prominent Bay Area leader and entrepreneur, Dr. Chris Wachira.

Celebrating Black History: COA Kicks Off a Month of Festivities
College of Alameda launched its Black History Month (BHM) festivities on Thursday, February 1, 2024. Professor Jody Campbell, chair of the Ethnic Studies department, served as the master of ceremonies. The event began with a customary tribute to ancestors through libations, led by Professor Campbell, followed by a blessing delivered by Classified Senate Secretary Shawn Foster.

The FAFSA Form qualifies students for most types of financial aid available including the California College Promise Grant (aka Board of Governors Fee Waiver), Federal Pell Grant, and California State Grant.

COA Music Professor Glen Pearson Wins a 2024 Grammy Award
COA Music Professor and Performing Artist Glen Pearson, alongside the esteemed Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Scotty Barnhart, achieved the pinnacle of recognition in the music industry by clinching the Grammy Award for “Basie Swings the Blues” in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category.

Chancellor Gilkerson Explores Innovation at College of Alameda
On Friday, January 12, 2024, College of Alameda students, faculty, and staff were delighted to welcome Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson for a special visit to the campus. The day commenced with meetings with COA's administrative team and leaders of student, faculty, and classified professional constituency groups, offering a platform for introductions and direct exchange of ideas with the diverse voices that contribute to COA's unique identity.

Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson, newly-appointed Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District, spent her first full week on the job visiting the campuses of Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College. Each college created a welcoming environment for the Chancellor and her staff, and the hope and enthusiasm for the future were palpable in every conversation.

Marketing and Outreach Efforts Boost “Spring is Free” Enrollment Results
In an effort to promote the “Spring is Free” initiative for students enrolled in six or more units, the College of Alameda has ramped up its marketing and outreach activities. Working in collaboration with the District Public Information Office to promote Spring is Free @ PCCD, the College of Alameda launched an extensive advertising campaign in November.
