“Rethinking Our Possibilities” Classified Symposium a Success

The Peralta Community College District recently celebrated its third Classified Professional Symposium of the school year, themed “Rethinking Our Possibilities.” The event benefited from beautiful weather, both within the welcoming Laney Student Center and in the surrounding outdoor spaces.

Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson noted the exceptional work of the organizing team, comprised of Angela Kimble and Louie Martirez y McFarland from College of Alameda, Brandi Carter, Jamile Teer, and Tachetta Henry from the District Service Center, Jamillah Saleh and Marisol Mateo from Merritt College, Tom Rizza from Berkeley City College, and Hope Lane from Laney College. Dr. Gilkerson stated that they "all did a wonderful job putting together the symposium."

The symposium featured a variety of professional development sessions designed and facilitated by Peralta's own classified professionals, underscoring the talent and expertise within the district. A highlight of the day was the keynote address delivered by Contra Costa Community College District’s esteemed Chancellor Mojdeh Mehdizadeh, whose career began as a classified professional.

Attendees from across the district participated in the day's activities, demonstrating strong engagement and a commitment to professional growth. Dr. Gilkerson also playfully acknowledged the district's appreciation for good food, remarking, "And y’all know how we love our food here..." A much-anticipated part of the day was the delicious grilled chicken and burgers prepared by Greg Nelson and Bc Hoff. Chancellor Gilkerson, along with administrators from the District Service Center and Laney College, served the meal to attendees.

Reflecting on the successful event, Dr. Gilkerson concluded, "It was truly a wonderful day, and a great way to end the week..." The symposium served as a valuable opportunity for professional development, networking, and celebrating the vital contributions of Peralta's classified professionals.
