Nick Arata remembers watching car repair programs on TV with his grandfather when he was growing up. He always wanted to know how things work and how to fix them when they broke. He started taking Auto classes at COA right out of high school.

Brian Guzman Awarded Ozzie Day Scholarship

On November 29, 2023, Brian Guzman received the Ozzie Day Scholarship from the College of Alameda Automotive Technology Department.
Brian Guzman is an Oakland native who grew up watching his dad fix family cars and helping out in any way he could. When Brian graduated from high school, he enrolled in Auto Technology classes at COA because he heard from friends that COA had the best Auto Tech classes in the area.

Berkeley City College Umoja Leader Eneni Frank Wins PAAAA Scholarship Award

Berkeley City College graduate and Umoja Leader Eneni Frank was this year’s BCC recipient of the Peralta Association of African American Affairs Scholarship. Frank, who will be transferring to UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, was awarded $750 along with 4 other PCCD scholars at the PAAAA Scholarship Award Ceremony on Thursday, May 4 at the Peralta Community College District Atrium.

The Peralta Association of African American Affairs (PAAAA) hosted a lovely event in honor of seven outstanding students on May 4th, 2023, at the Peralta Community College District headquarters in Oakland. Dr. Lawrence VanHook (PAAAA President) led attendees through the program that included Libations by Dr. Marlon Hall (Laney College Vice President of Student Services) and a thrilling performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by Laney College student Alison Fletcher.
Yumeus (Missy) Taylor Awarded Ozzie Day Scholarship

Yumeus Taylor is an Oakland native, but everyone calls her Missy. She has been fascinated with fixing cars since she was a little girl watching her uncle and dad work on their vehicles. After graduating high school in Oakland, she enrolled in Laney College for general studies courses and then started taking automotive classes at the College of Alameda. Missy is a single mom with two sons, and when she isn't working part-time as a technician at San Leandro Hyundai/Kia, she is joining her mom and sister to give back to the Oakland community by volunteering at the Bay Area Mega Center in Oakland.
HBCU Acceptance, Scholarships Await Laney Black Student Union Vice President

“I wear many hats here on Laney’s campus. For Instance, I am vice president of Laney’s Black Student Union, one of the Senators for the ASLC (Associated Students of Laney College), and an intern at Laney’s Athletics as a student trainer. I am also a part of Umoja-Ubaka, a learning community, where I've got many opportunities, one of them being a participant of the Huston-Tillotson University recruiting visit to Laney.
