California Architects Board Meets at Laney College

On August 21, 2025, Laney College was honored to host the California Architects Board public meeting at the BEST Center. The statewide regulatory body oversees the licensure and practice of architects in California and gathered to discuss legislative updates, licensing matters, and national professional standards.

Welcoming Ilona McGriff, Director of Workforce Development

Berkeley City College is pleased to welcome Ilona McGriff in her role as Director of Workforce Development. Ilona will support California Apprenticeship Initiative grants, SWP, and Perkins planning and reporting, as well as employer engagement and identifying new funding for the College. We’re excited to have someone with Ilona’s expertise to help bolster the college’s growing workforce partnerships and grants.

Strategic Scheduling Yields Strong Enrollment and Increased Productivity at Merritt College

With the Fall 2025 semester fully underway, I am pleased to share that Merritt College is in a very strong position as it pertains to our enrollment picture this term. Compared to this same time last year, we are currently offering 39 fewer sections and utilizing 13 fewer FTEF. And yet, we have only 88 fewer students attending the college (which resulted in an increase in productivity from 13.92 to 15.47).

Back to Fall at Laney College: A Strong Start for 2025

Laney College welcomed students, faculty, and staff back to campus with energy and optimism for the Fall 2025 term. Total enrollment reached 9,681 students, marking a 4% increase over last fall, a promising indicator of the continued growth and engagement within our community. Students can choose from 582 sections of classes, offering a wide range of opportunities to pursue academic, career, and personal goals.

New Logo, Same Mission: Rebranding for the Future

This past spring, College of Alameda (CoA) engaged in a collaborative process to refresh our look with a new logo and brand guide. The design was shaped by broad collegewide participation, ensuring that our new identity reflects the collective spirit and vision of our community.

Fall Flex Day Welcomes Back BCC Community and Honors Retirees

Berkeley City College launched the new academic year with its Fall 2025 Flex Day on Friday, August 15, organized by the Professional Development Committee. The day began with a warm breakfast, providing faculty, staff, and administrators an opportunity to reconnect while enjoying a slideshow of summer vacation photos shared by employees.

MESA Hosts Biotech Brunch at Laney Bistro

On May 2, 2025, Laney College’s MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Program hosted a brunch at the Laney Bistro, bringing together STEM students, faculty, and members of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE). The event provided a valuable opportunity for students interested in biotechnology and related fields to connect with professionals and peers.

Last month, the President’s Office received notification that the College of Alameda has been nominated for the Excellence in Workforce Development Award at the 2025 Innovation Island Excellence Awards! The nomination highlighted CoA’s commitment to innovation, creativity, and how our impact has set a remarkable standard in our community.
