On November 1, Laney College honored our late colleague Rene Rivas with a ceremony that officially named the 6th floor Classified Employee Lounge after him. Family, friends, and colleagues gathered for a reception, lunch, and ceremony, first in the Tower lobby and culminating on the 6th floor with a ribbon cutting and sharing of mementos that will remain in a space that henceforth will carry his name.

Award-winning Dance Professor Danny Nguyen and his students were invited to perform at the 56th Raising of the United Nations Flag and Parade of 193 Member State Flags, held on October 8, 2022, at Jack London Square (JLS), in Oakland. Chair of the United Nations (UN) Flag Raising at JLS Dr. Veronica Ufoegbune expressed her appreciation in a letter and invited the group to perform again next year.

President Garcia visited BCC student Sofia Laguna Milian at her internship at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Milian previously interned with Bayer while she was a Berkeley High School student, graduating in 2021.

On Wednesday, November 3, five employees attended the first California Community Colleges Organization de Latinx Empowerment, Guidance, and Advocacy for Success (COLEGAS) Annual Conference in Long Beach.
Laney College Theater Arts Puts on a Great Show, Promotes Excellence

The Laney Theater Arts Department put on four performances of “Art is Useless When Being Mauled by a Bear” in November. The play was directed by Laney Professor Michael Torres and written by Alisa Tangredi, who was present for all the productions and praised all involved at Laney. Also, following the performance, cast member and first-semester student Jackson Nguyen was subsequently cast in another production off campus.

CoA ADAM Program students were featured in the 2022 Designer Showcase at Fibershed’s Rooted in Simplicity event, on September 17, 2022, at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes, California. ADAM students Chi Do and Lina Egutkina participated in an innovative workshop that focused on making indigo dye vats at the Fibershed Learning Center in June 2022.
PCCD Announces Sale of $151 Million of General Obligation Bonds

OAKLAND, CA – During the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) Charrette on November 10, 2022, Interim Chancellor Dr. Jannett N. Jackson announced the successful sale of approximately $151 million of General Obligation (GO) bonds. The sale included $120 million of GO new money bonds that will fund voter-approved infrastructure improvements at PCCD’s four colleges and $31 million of GO refunding bonds to refinance bonds issued in 2012.
