Merritt College Hosts Clean Slate/Record Expungement Event
On Friday, March 24, our Street Scholars Program sponsored a Clean Slate/Record Expungement event for our students and community members. The program was held at the Love/Moss Center in partnership with The Access Project (TAP), whose mission is to complement and support the work of nonprofit organizations around the state by reimagining the relationship between the pro bono and legal services communities.

Phi Theta Kappa Honors Laney College Student
On Thursday, March 23, the College community was warmed with the news that student Nicholas Rothman was one of the select 75 honorees in the state to receive a Phi Theta Kappa California Community College award. These awards are made by the Community College League, honoring students who “have persevered and excelled in their college efforts and deserve recognition for their achievements.” We congratulate Nicholas, who among other honors will be featured in a statewide yearbook that features all winners. Laney is proud!

CoA Hosts Annual High School Partners Breakfast
In early March 2023, College of Alameda Student Services hosted its Annual High School Partners Breakfast. Over 60 participants representing 29 high schools and pre-college programs across five school districts attended the event. CoA’s Annual High School Partners Breakfast brings together school counselors, advisors, and other education professionals who provide direct services to high school students.

New Dual-Enrolled Students Club Builds BCC DE Community
The Dual-Enrolled Students Club (DESC) was founded in the Fall of 2022 as a club for high school students who are taking, or want to take, classes at BCC. DESC aims to create a community for dual-enrolled students to connect with each other, share resources they’ve found helpful, discuss how to manage schoolwork, and overall provide support with the processes of dual enrollment. The club was founded by Lale Kurtulush, a high school senior who has been taking classes at BCC since her freshman year. She is joined in leading the club by fellow dual-enrolled students Luke Boreczky and Reem Mahmoud.

Merritt Colleges wishes to extend a hearty congratulations to two of our faculty members who just achieved a significant milestone. Sun Young Ban (Math) and Alejandro Garcia will be awarded tenure, having demonstrated their teaching acumen in the classroom, as well as their service to the College.
Laney Lady Cagers Light up California Courts with Championship Basketball!

Congratulations to the Laney College Women's Basketball team on a great season. The team reached the state semifinals before falling to the Santa Rosa Bearcubs despite a valiant effort until the very last second of the game. Below is a picture of the players and coaches following their first-round playoff win over an athletic, formidable San Jose City College team on March 3rd at Laney.
CoA Welcomes New Head Coach

Lauren Nieraeth is CoA’s new head women’s volleyball coach. Nieraeth is well-versed in coaching California Community College student-athletes. Most recently she was the assistant coach, under Katelyn Roberts at Riverside City College with the women’s beach volleyball program. She was also assistant coach for women’s volleyball, under Suzie Witmer, at her alma mater Long Beach City College LBCC).
BCC Scholars and Staff Attend A2MEND Conference in Los Angeles

From March 1 through 3, over 1,300 students, faculty, staff, and administrators at California’s Community Colleges convened at the 16th Annual African American Male Education Network Conference (A2MEND) in Los Angeles. Berkeley City College was well represented by six scholars; BCC and Laney Instructor of African American Studies and Ethnic Studies, Jimmy Crutison; and Vice President of Administrative Services, Sean Brooks.
Laney Welcomes New Web Content Developer

Chanda Brewer has joined Laney College as its new Web Content Developer. Ms. Brewer comes with a wide range of experience in web design and development, specifically a 20+ year background in Marketing and Management for the technology and hospitality industries in Oakland and San Francisco. Coupled with her expertise in web-based technology is a strong background in marketing, including online promotions, as well as other experience in the private business sector.
