The Sky Is the Limit: CoA’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Program

CoA’s Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) Program serves students seeking employment as trained technicians in the aviation industry. The program operates under the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and is located in a facility at 970 Harbor Bay Parkway, in Alameda, adjacent to the Oakland International Airport. Facilities include a sheet metal shop, an engine shop, welding equipment, and aircraft system trainers.

Merritt College:  Guided Pathways

Given its efficacy as a nationally recognized, evidence-based student success strategy, Merritt College adopted Guided Pathways as an integral component of attaining the college’s institutional mission. One of the signature goals of Guided Pathways is to provide students with clear guidelines and touch points for entering college, navigating program/degree requirements, and connecting majors with tangible career pathways. 

Laney College Partners with Schnitzer Steel Industries

Laney is excited to announce that the college has formed a partnership with Schnitzer Steel Industries, a metal recycling firm based in Oakland. During the three-year partnership, Schnitzer Steel guarantees an annual financial sponsorship dedicated to support Laney College’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. O

On July 20th, the governing Board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) voted to award $51.08 million to fifteen community colleges and universities across California, including Berkeley City College (BCC), to fund programs that will help train the next generation of stem cell researchers. As part of the CIRM Bridges to Stem Cell Research and Therapy program award, BCC will receive $2,806,896 over five years.

On July 27, Berkeley City College President Dr. Angélica Garcia informed the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees about the College’s award and its impact on student success, equity, and workforce development. This is the kind of partnership and collaboration between higher education, science, and industry partners that serves local communities.

Laney College mechanical engineering student Gabriela Manrique has been selected by NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) to attend the NCAS Virtual Experience during the spring and summer sessions.  Congratulations Gabriela!

The Peralta Community College District Children's Centers (located at Laney College & Merritt College) are currently recruiting and enrolling new families with children ages 3 to 5 years. KGPC radio directly serves the Peralta Community College District's students, faculty and staff, East Bay cities and international audiences that listen to the streaming broadcast. It exists to serve Oakland and the Peralta Community Colleges with award-winning local programming that make it a treasure for PCCD. The station is a resource that allows individuals to get involved in local media production and add their voice to the airwaves. It is one of the few "LP-FM" stations to be licensed by the FCC, an act that the FCC may not do again, ever. Take a listen and hear the wave of the East Bay, KGPC.

On June 28, 2021, Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College each received official communication from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC). During their June 9-11, 2021 meeting, the ACCJC reviewed the Special Reports, Institutional Self Evaluation Reports (ISERs) and peer review site visit reports from December 2020 and March 2021 to determine whether the Peralta Colleges met accreditation standards.  As we anticipated, the ACCJC acted to continue the status of Probation originally imposed in January 2020, with a required follow-up report due by October 1, 2021, in turn to be followed by a visit from a peer review team.   

This July Peralta TV is your source for compelling stories, from the Koi and Habemetol Pomo peoples of the Clear Lake region working to preserve their heritage from looting and urbanization, to a case study in the abuse and neglect of people with intellectual disabilities in institutional settings.
