Peralta Colleges to Erase $2.8 Million in Student Debt

The Peralta Community College District has targeted more than $12 million in federal relief funds to wipe out student debt and provide enhanced financial aid resources for the 30,000 students enrolled across its four East Bay campuses. Some $2.77 million will be allocated for the relief of student debt from the most recent three semesters, going back to Summer 2020 impacted by the global pandemic. An additional $9.5 million is earmarked for financial aid for future semesters.

Merritt College celebrates Dr. Huey P. Newton and the 55th anniversary of the Black Panther Party

On the weekend of October 22-24, 2021, Merritt College and the Oakland community celebrated Dr. Huey P. Newton and the the 55th anniversary of the Black Panther Party . Dr. Newton, who along with Bobby Seale co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966, was honored with the unveiling of a bronze bust statue, on Sunday, October 24that the intersection of Mandela Parkway and Dr. Huey P. Newton Way...the place where the leader took his last breath.

COA Innovative HyFlex Data Coaching & Equitable Scheduling Retreat

Fifty-nine College of Alameda faculty, classified professionals, students, and administrators gathered for the College’s first hybrid flexible (HyFlex) event since the start of the pandemic. The event was held over two half day sessions on October 7 and 8, 2021. Titled Just in Time Data Coaching and Equitable Scheduling Retreat, the innovative event focused on data literacy, improving the scheduling process, and aligning planning with both institutional and district goals. Twenty participants attended in-person, adhering to the District’s masking and social distancing Covid-19 safety guidelines, and 39 individuals joined virtually using Zoom.

Merritt College Home of the Black Panthers

This October marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and as Merritt College played a significant role in the Party’s historical origins, we proudly took part in the celebrations to commemorate the occasion. On Friday, October 15, 2021, students, staff, and community members revisited last year’s conversation about the legacy of the Party.

Fatima Shah: From BCC Student to Academic Counselor

How do you feel when you talk to a counselor that knows exactly what you are going through? How do you feel when you find out that your counselor is an immigrant like you? Fatima Shah is a Pakistani woman who immigrated to the United States with her family when she was still a teenager. Fatima went to Berkeley High School, applied for Berkeley City College, became a student employee, and now she has been serving her community as a general counselor at BCC.
