On Wednesday, April 24, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson presented at the Foundation of California Community Colleges LGBTQ+ Summit - Rise, Resist, Empower: The Unstoppable Movement for Queer and Trans Liberation, elevating the basic needs of LGBTQ+ CCC students.
On April 25th, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson hosted a workshop attended by over 50 stakeholders across the district involved in the contract process, including classified professionals, faculty, administrators, and outside legal counsel.
Merritt Hosts Career Opportunity Events
Last week, Merritt College hosted two amazing events focused on career education and opportunities for our students. On Wednesday, May 1, we co-sponsored the Merritt College Job and Career Fair with Insight Housing (a non-profit organization committed to ensuring supportive, equitable, and sustainable housing solutions).
Laney Custodial Staff Earns Inaugural Award
On April 26, 2024, Laney College Custodial staff were recognized with the first “Above and Beyond” Award at the College’s Employee Appreciation event. While individuals are recognized each year with the “We Rise” employee awards, this new distinction will now recognize one entire unit or office at the College that teams up to support students and the campus community at a level of excellence.

On April 19, 2024, College of Alameda (CoA) welcomed over 350 high school students from the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) to its campus for another transformative Career Discovery Day.
50th Anniversary Block Party & BCC West Groundbreaking Ceremony
On Tuesday, April 23, Berkeley City College honored its past with a beautiful, vibrant block party, complete with good food, dancing, and even horseback riding! Berkeley City College programs and resources were on full display as we tabled with intention, bringing greater awareness to the tremendous value that we offer our community.
In Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, Bell Hooks wrote, “The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy.” It is this intention and the influence of teachers, thinkers, and writers like Hooks that led the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) Executive Committee to select the theme for this session, "Radicalizing Spaces of Possibility: Faculty Leadership in Vision 2030".
Congratulations to Program Director Ben Nelson, faculty members Elizabeth Boegel and Brad Balukjian, and the entire Merritt College Natural History and Sustainability program, who recently received recognition from the U.S. Congress and a John Muir Award for Environmental Education Advocacy.
On Friday, April 19, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson was invited by the American Council on Education Women’s Network of Northern California to participate in an online panel titled, “Reflections on Intersectionality and Culture-Oriented Leadership”.
On Thursday, April 11th, Student Trustees Natasha Masand and Naomi Vasquezled another successful district-wide meeting of student leaders, following up on their initial meeting on February 28th. This meeting included Associated Student government groups from each of the four colleges.
