At the April 14, 2026, meeting of the Board of Trustees, Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson celebrated the third cohort of the "Flying Pig Awards." The awards, established in 2024, honor those within the Peralta community who go above and beyond to serve students and the District in ways that often seem improbable.

As Black History Month draws to a close, the Peralta Community College District family is mourning the loss of a foundational figure in our history, the Reverend Dr. Robert McKnight, who passed away on February 7, 2026. A dedicated educator, Black history curriculum innovator, pastor, and community leader, Dr. McKnight’s influence spanned four decades across all four Peralta campuses.

The Peralta Community College District (PCCD) proudly announces that all four of its colleges – Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College – have been designated as Black-Serving Institutions (BSI), a state recognition for colleges and universities that demonstrate excellence in supporting Black and African American students.
On Friday, December 5th, PCCD Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson joined an especially strong contingent of representatives from the Peralta Colleges at this year’s Basic Needs Summit at Napa Valley College.
