March 2-8 marked Women in Construction Week, a time to celebrate and encourage women’s vital contributions to the building trades. At Peralta Community College District, the ongoing Berkeley City College (BCC) Milvia Street construction project in downtown Berkeley stands as a powerful example of women’s leadership in action.
Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson shared an uplifting report with the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees on March 11th, detailing her experience at the
49th Annual Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) Conference in Monterey. As the current ACCCA President, Dr. Gilkerson found the gathering to be a powerful experience of learning, growth, and celebration in service to student success and institutional strength.
Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson is featured in a two-part episode of the EDUCATE. ELEVATE. podcast, exploring California’s new Black-Serving Institution (BSI) designation. This significant legislation, Senate Bill 1348, allows community colleges with a substantial Black student population (10% or 1,500 students) to seek BSI status. Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College are included among the California Community Colleges that meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the designation.
Many thanks to everyone who attended the Budget Town Hall meeting on Friday, January 31, 2025, hosted by Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson, Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District, and Greg Nelson, Deputy Chancellor and COO. The Zoom meeting was well attended with 300 participants on the call.

On Friday, November 1, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson was the plenary speaker for the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) 50th Anniversary annual conference "LEADING LIKE A WOMAN, 50 YEARS STRONG".
On Friday, October 11th, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson attended "Guided Pathways”, a Student Government Retreat at College of Alameda organized by Student Trustees Sophia Parmigiani and Pierce Byrne.
The Peralta Community College District was featured throughout the September issue of the national magazine, Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
On Thursday, September 26th, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson joined President Dixon and a strong team from College of Alameda on board the USS Hornet for an excellent event hosted by the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance. The event included a “Fiscal Fireside Keynote Conversation” with California State Treasurer Fiona Ma and State Controller Malia Cohen. Chancellor Gilkerson also participated as a panelist discussing the Alameda Economic Forecast. There were more than 300 people attending.
On Thursday, August 29th, Peralta Community College District Chancellor, Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson, led a gathering of administrators from across the district for a Managers Retreat at Merritt College. "I want to thank Dr. David Johnson and the Merritt College team for hosting us. It was an incredibly productive day where we had the chance to hear from brilliant leaders including Dr. Keith Curry, and our own Jamille Teer, Dr. Ron McKinley, and Dr. Jennifer Shanoski," said Chancellor Gilkerson.
