Honoring the Legacy of the Reverend Dr. Robert McKnight

Feb 27, 2026 2:38:28 PM / by Mark Johnson

As Black History Month draws to a close, the Peralta Community College District family is mourning the loss of a foundational figure in our history, the Reverend Dr. Robert McKnight, who passed away on February 7, 2026. A dedicated educator, Black history curriculum innovator, pastor, and community leader, Dr. McKnight’s influence spanned four decades across all four Peralta campuses.

Reverend Dr. Robert McKnight

Dr. McKnight served as an African American Studies adjunct instructor from 1980 to 2020. Merritt College President Dr. David M. Johnson noted that McKnight was a "significant figure in the history of Peralta" and a "driving force for establishing the first high school Black Studies program in the country," in the 1960s at Berkeley High, a program that continues to this day.

During his forty years of service with the Peralta Colleges, he taught African Civilization, African American History, Social Psychology of Black Male/Female Relationships, The Black Family, Religion and The Black Church, Roots of African American Culture, Introduction of African American Studies, and African Psychology. He was the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award, and has been recognized by the city of Berkeley, Alameda County, California State Legislature, and by the United States Congress for his commitment to education.

Beyond his academic contributions, Dr. McKnight was the Pastor at the Rock of Truth Baptist Church. The congregation would often rent space in the Newton / Seale Student Lounge at Merritt for special events.

Merritt College Facilities Project Coordinator Tara Marrero shared touching memories of the Reverend and his wife, Venice McKnight, who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. "I have had the honor of knowing the McKnight’s since I started at Merritt College over ten years ago. The love I witnessed between the McKnight’s during events showed me what true long-lasting love, respect, and commitment looked like in real life."

Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson commented, “My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. McKnight and to all who loved and learned from Dr. McKnight. The story of their 60 years together is truly moving, and it’s clear how much joy and wisdom they both brought to our community. His long commitment to our students and his role in developing the Black Studies curriculum leave a meaningful legacy across our colleges and the nation."

The District will honor his memory at the upcoming Board of Trustees meeting.
