ELEVATE. podcast, exploring California’s new Black-Serving Institution (BSI) designation. This significant legislation, Senate Bill 1348, allows community colleges with a substantial Black student population (10% or 1,500 students) to seek BSI status. Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College are included among the California Community Colleges that meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the designation.

On Thursday, September 26th, Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson joined President Dixon and a strong team from College of Alameda on board the USS Hornet for an excellent event hosted by the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance. The event included a “Fiscal Fireside Keynote Conversation” with California State Treasurer Fiona Ma and State Controller Malia Cohen. Chancellor Gilkerson also participated as a panelist discussing the Alameda Economic Forecast. There were more than 300 people attending.

On August 15, 2024, Peralta Community College District employees (and at least one student!) gathered at Laney College for a dynamic and engaging Flex Day focused on professional development. Organized by district-wide Professional Development Co-Coordinators Chelsea Cohen and Marla Leech (both Laney College faculty members), the event was a resounding success, bringing together educators from across the district to enhance their skills, particularly with regards to Artificial Intelligence (AI), and collaborate on maximizing student success in the upcoming semester.
