Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson, newly-appointed Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District, spent her first full week on the job visiting the campuses of Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College. Each college created a welcoming environment for the Chancellor and her staff, and the hope and enthusiasm for the future were palpable in every conversation.

Not Even Rain Can Dampen On-Campus Enrollment Efforts

On January 13th and 20th, Laney College staff, counselors, classroom faculty, and administrators continued the tradition of holding this successful onsite registration event for returning students and the public. Despite inclement weather, the College’s One-Stop planning group managed to offer all pre-semester services while providing breakfast, and even in a downpour, students still took advantage.

OAKLAND, Calif., January 8, 2024 – Free College continues at Laney for the upcoming Spring semester with enrollment events on January 13 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., marking the two-year anniversary of a groundbreaking effort that has seen massive enrollment increases, especially among African American, Latinx, and Asian students.

The First Laney Student Storytellers Event

On November 29th, the Fall Laney Student Storytellers Event was held in the College Library. Twenty-five Laney students shared personal stories of how their lived experiences have influenced them and how Laney College fits into their lives. Students’ narratives described challenges faced and overcome, people who have helped them in their journeys, and plans they have for their futures.

Laney Fall Fest 2023 Emphasizes Student Support, Campus Life

On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Laney College hosted the mid-semester Fall Festival at the Laney Quad from 11:30am-1:30pm. Now in its third year of existence, the event has shifted its focus from promoting enrollment to highlighting student life activities. Along with outstanding Classified Professional leaders at Laney, the ASLC and student club organizations have added their dedication to what has become a bustling event that happens twice a year at the midway point of the semester.

Freshman Cross Country runner Emily Wonsang placed 10th for individuals and 32nd overall at the NorCal Championship Meet, advancing her to the CCCAA State Championship Meet on November 18th in Fresno, CA. Wonsang is the first Laney College Cross Country runner to advance to the State Meet in the program’s history, finishing with a time of 21:06 at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, CA.

Eagles Nest-Basic Needs Center Distributes Clothing to Needy Students

On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the Laney College Eagles Nest – serving as the Student Basic Needs Center - held a clothing pop-up on the Laney College quad. In total, 78 students received items to address insecurities and help them as they navigate the challenges of the Fall semester. This took place on a Wednesday, the same day that take-home food boxes (complete with protein items) are provided to currently enrolled students who show a valid student ID. Billed as a “pop-up”, the event was widely announced thanks to the great social media acumen of Basic Needs Coordinator Katrina Santos.
