The Laney College football field was a scene of immense pride and jubilation on May 23, 2025, as nearly 6,000 attendees gathered for the 2025 Laney College Commencement. The atmosphere was electrifying, celebrating the dedication and perseverance of the graduating class.

Laney 2025 Graduation Chancellor Gilkerson

Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson addressed the graduates with powerful words, urging them to embrace their role in shaping the world. "Today is a celebration of effort, of growth, of late nights and early mornings, of friendship and learning, and perseverance." She emphasized the importance of moral action, reminding students, "The most meaningful lives aren't built on delay; they are built on courageous, ethical action in the moment it's needed most."

Laney 2025 Graduation Dr Opsata

Acting Laney College President Dr. Becky Opsata shared her immense pride in the graduates and their accomplishments. "I want to tell all of the graduates here in front of you, in front of me, that I'm very proud of you, and the faculty is proud of you... and I hope you are proud of yourself." She also highlighted impressive statistics, noting that 790 students earned 1,344 degrees and certificates, including an 82-year-old graduate and a 16-year-old graduating with a 4.0 GPA and an associate's degree.

Laney 2025 Graduation Kevin Jenkins

The keynote address was delivered by the Honorable Kevin Jenkins, Oakland City Council President, former Peralta Trustee, and a proud Laney College alum. Jenkins, who also served as interim mayor of Oakland, shared his personal journey, admitting his path wasn't always straightforward. "I didn't graduate right away. Did it take some of you guys longer than two years? Give it up for yourselves, perseverance!" He continued, "Your detour doesn't disqualify you, your struggle isn't your weakness, it's your strength."

Laney 2025 Graduation Aniya Jones

Student speakers also offered heartfelt and inspiring messages. Valedictorian Aniya Jones, who earned two degrees and was accepted into 20 universities with full rides, including UCLA, declared her future ambitions: "I will be a lawyer focusing on criminal defense and contract law, and eventually I will step into public service from city hall to the state house, maybe even Congress, maybe even one day the Oval Office!" She empowered her peers, stating, "We are not here to be silenced, we're here to be powerful."

Laney 2025 Graduation Rose Foster

Rose Foster, the valedictorian for the Gateway to College program, shared her transformative experience. "Gateway to College didn't just give us a second chance, it gave us a space to grow into who we were meant to become." She reminded her fellow graduates, "Don't forget how far you've already come. You've already done something incredible. You've shown the world that you don't give up."

The energy throughout the ceremony was palpable, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Class of 2025 and the unwavering support of their families, friends, and the entire Laney College community.

Congratulations to the Laney College Class of 2025!
