Newly created role will oversee campus security as part of the Peralta Community College District’s innovative holistic approach to public safety and restorative justice

At their regular meeting on November 9, 2021, the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Timothy “Tim” Thomas as the Director of Public Safety serving the District and its four colleges. The Director of Public Safety is a new role created as part of the District’s vision for a holistic community-oriented approach to campus safety and security. Mr. Thomas, who has extensive experience as both a law enforcement officer and a college educator, will start on November 15, 2021.

Laney College LGBTQIA+ Community, Allies Host and Enjoy Halloween Event!
On October 27, the Lavender Project hosted its annual Laney Queers Fall Costume Tea Party for employees, students and allies across the District. The group was excited to reunite since on-campus events have been scarce due to the pandemic, with students from at least three of the four campuses in attendance.. The two-hour event took place at the Laney Bistro and via Zoom, with guests enjoying light refreshments and much needed interaction. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes, and the planning and hard work that went into the event was evident for all who attended.

COA Puente Family Night

Puente Noche de Familia (Puente Family Night) is a special annual event that celebrates the families and friends of CoA’s Puente students. This year over 35 Puente students, friends, and family members celebrated together virtually on Zoom. The evening offered participants a variety of engaging activities, including important transfer information and special appreciation for those important individuals who help our Puente students stay focused on their education and achieve their goals.

Berkeley City College Return to Campus for Students

On October 15th, Berkeley City College held a town hall to provide information and hear input from students regarding returning to campus. As a result of the successful town hall, the Associated Students of Berkeley City College (ASBCC) is hosting a weekly student circle every Wednesday from 12:20 – 1:20pm to gather thoughts from students.

Merritt College Partners with Oakland City Councilmember for Event

On Saturday, October 30^th Merritt College partnered with Oakland City Councilmember Loren Taylor to sponsor the Trunk or Treat in the East event at Liberation Lot in East Oakland (@73^rd Avenue and Foothill Blvd). 

The Peralta Community College District has targeted more than $12 million in federal relief funds to wipe out student debt and provide enhanced financial aid resources for the 30,000 students enrolled across its four East Bay campuses. Some $2.77 million will be allocated for the relief of student debt from the most recent three semesters, going back to Summer 2020 impacted by the global pandemic. An additional $9.5 million is earmarked for financial aid for future semesters.

The Chancellor, Peralta College Presidents and our respective campuses at Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College join our greater community in mourning the passing of Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan.

On the weekend of October 22-24, 2021, Merritt College and the Oakland community celebrated Dr. Huey P. Newton and the the 55th anniversary of the Black Panther Party . Dr. Newton, who along with Bobby Seale co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966, was honored with the unveiling of a bronze bust statue, on Sunday, October 24th, at the intersection of Mandela Parkway and Dr. Huey P. Newton Way...the place where the leader took his last breath.
