Merritt College celebrates Dr. Huey P. Newton and the 55th anniversary of the Black Panther Party

On the weekend of October 22-24, 2021, Merritt College and the Oakland community celebrated Dr. Huey P. Newton and the the 55th anniversary of the Black Panther Party . Dr. Newton, who along with Bobby Seale co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966, was honored with the unveiling of a bronze bust statue, on Sunday, October 24that the intersection of Mandela Parkway and Dr. Huey P. Newton Way...the place where the leader took his last breath.

COA Innovative HyFlex Data Coaching & Equitable Scheduling Retreat

Fifty-nine College of Alameda faculty, classified professionals, students, and administrators gathered for the College’s first hybrid flexible (HyFlex) event since the start of the pandemic. The event was held over two half day sessions on October 7 and 8, 2021. Titled Just in Time Data Coaching and Equitable Scheduling Retreat, the innovative event focused on data literacy, improving the scheduling process, and aligning planning with both institutional and district goals. Twenty participants attended in-person, adhering to the District’s masking and social distancing Covid-19 safety guidelines, and 39 individuals joined virtually using Zoom.

This October marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and as Merritt College played a significant role in the Party’s historical origins, we proudly took part in the celebrations to commemorate the occasion. How do you feel when you talk to a counselor that knows exactly what you are going through? How do you feel when you find out that your counselor is an immigrant like you? Fatima Shah is a Pakistani woman who immigrated to the United States with her family when she was still a teenager. Fatima went to Berkeley High School, applied for Berkeley City College, became a student employee, and now she has been serving her community as a general counselor at BCC.

The Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 for another productive meeting. Meeting highlights included a deep dive into how the Peralta Colleges are spending federal relief funds, a preview of the Functional Maps that articulate the division of labor between the District and the Colleges, and a contract extension to keep Dr. Jannett N. Jackson as Interim Chancellor through December 2023.

Peralta students selected to scholarship program as software testers

Three Peralta District students were accepted to a scholarship-based program that focuses on training students to become software testers. Marina Daltro (Laney College), Stefanie Mutialu (Merritt College), and Gift Olatunji (Laney College) applied for the Testlio Ignite program in July of 2021. Testlio Ignite, created by the tech company Testlio, Inc in 2020, is a social impact program for people from marginalized groups intended to initiate their career in remote software testing via a 10-week scholarship-based program.
