What a night—A mixture a pain and heartbreak over the difficult financial circumstances we are in and the decisions we were faced with followed by inspiration and hope from a new model of shared governance and presentations from Berkeley City College. This update is intended for the inspiration and hope side of the equation with some brief thoughts about the pain and heartbreak.

Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson is featured in a two-part episode of the EDUCATE. ELEVATE. podcast, exploring California’s new Black-Serving Institution (BSI) designation. This significant legislation, Senate Bill 1348, allows community colleges with a substantial Black student population (10% or 1,500 students) to seek BSI status. Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College are included among the California Community Colleges that meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the designation.
Congratulations to Dr. Denise Richardson, President of Berkeley City College, and her co-author, Dr. Alfred McQuarters, President of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, for the publication of their article in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, a national magazine with over 35,000 readers.
Laney College recently rang in the Year of the Snake with a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration on January 30th, 2025. Organized by the Laney College APASS Program and emceed by program director Dr. David Lee, the event brought together students, faculty, and community members to honor this significant cultural occasion. The festivities offered a rich blend of music, performances, and community spirit, creating a memorable afternoon for all in attendance.

Follett Higher Education, are adjusting their services to help reduce costs now that the semester is in full swing. During this transition, we’re collaborating with Follett as the District works on a new Request for Proposals (RFP) for
bookstore operations. Since 2004, we’ve had a partnership with Follett, and over the years, the industry has changed significantly with the rise of book loans, zero-cost textbooks, OER materials, online used retailers, rental textbooks, and other improvements aimed at easing the financial burden of textbooks for our students.

The Fall Semester was quite the introduction to life as a college student. My whole life I had been told that college would be much easier than high school. Of course, all good things take a little effort to absorb. While college has been stressful, I look forward to many things, including graduation!

A diverse group of Savoring Tradition: A Culinary Reflection on Black History attendees gathers around the Gumbo & Cornbread serving station.
On February 19, 2025, the College of Alameda (COA) Student Center came alive with the rich aromas and deep history of Black cuisine. "Savoring Tradition: A Culinary Reflection on Black History" brought together students, faculty, and staff for a special cooking presentation that was as much about storytelling as it was about food.
The Laney Football Team is coming off a tough season but that has not dampened the spirits of the new Head Coach nor the over 95 student-athletes participating in Spring workouts. Josh Ramos has stepped in as Laney Football’s new Head Coach, following the stellar tenure of legendary coach John Beam.
