Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson is featured in a two-part episode of the EDUCATE. ELEVATE. podcast, exploring California’s new Black-Serving Institution (BSI) designation. This significant legislation, Senate Bill 1348, allows community colleges with a substantial Black student population (10% or 1,500 students) to seek BSI status.  Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College are included among the California Community Colleges that meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the designation.

Organized by the Laney College APASS Program and emceed by program director Dr. David Lee, the event brought together students, faculty, and community members to honor this significant cultural occasion. The festivities offered a rich blend of music, performances, and community spirit, creating a memorable afternoon for all in attendance.

Update on College Bookstores

The campus bookstores, operated by Follett Higher Education, are adjusting their services to help reduce costs now that the semester is in full swing. During this transition, we’re collaborating with Follett as the District works on a new Request for Proposals (RFP) for bookstore operations. Since 2004, we’ve had a partnership with Follett, and over the years, the industry has changed significantly with the rise of book loans, zero-cost textbooks, OER materials, online used retailers, rental textbooks, and other improvements aimed at easing the financial burden of textbooks for our students.

"Savoring Tradition: A Culinary Reflection on Black History" brought together students, faculty, and staff for a special cooking presentation that was as much about storytelling as it was about food.
