Berkeley City College is thrilled to have a new Assistant Chief of Engineering at BCC, Mr. Felix Smith, who has been with the Peralta Community College District (“PCCD”) since 2008 and at BCC since February 2023. Mr. Smith has a storied and progressive background beginning his PCCD career as an hourly custodian, progressed to Permanent Custodian, then Senior Store Keeper, and then placement as Head Custodian.

Congratulations to Berkeley City College students Nia Roberson-French and Ian Strieter for their recognition as Phi Theta Kappa All-California Winners. This year, 112 students were chosen from across the California Community College system in recognition for their grades, leadership, and community service.
ASBCC Members Take Part in SSCCC Conference

Four ASBCC members traveled to Long Beach for the Student Senate for California Community Colleges Conference (SSCCC) from March 31 through April 2. ASBCC President Mazin Saeed and Senators Kristiyan Klichev, Pierce Byrne, and Li Wan attended workshops covering running successful meetings with the post-Covid Brown Act requirements, understanding and navigating California’s budget processes, and previewing SSCCC’s three-year strategic plan, and more. This year’s keynote speaker was California Community College Interim Chancellor Dr. Daisy Gonzales, whose speech focused on marketing and outreach to students.

Merritt College Partners with Oakland Housing Authority
As part of Merritt Colleges new partnership with the Oakland Housing Authority, on April 4th the Outreach team visited the Lockwood Gardens Housing Village (located at 66th Avenue and International Boulevard) to support our young people participating in a national Esports tournament for Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assisted students. The overarching goal of our collaboration is to support post-secondary education into our technology and cybersecurity pathways.

On April 5, 2023, the Asian Pacific American Student Success (APASS) program, partnering with the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, and the Lao Family Community Development Foundation hosted a Job Readiness Bootcamp at the Asian Cultural Center in Oakland Chinatown.

Puente Program Holds Its Annual Puente Mentor and Mentee Mixer
College of Alameda's (CoA) Puente Program held its annual Puente Mentor and Mentee Mixer on Thursday, March 16, 2023, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. This was Puente's first in-person Mentor and Mentee Mixer. Puente students and their mentors networked through a series of icebreaker activities and enjoyed pan dulce and chocolate.

Solidarity in Mental Health Summit - Neurodiversity and Mental Wellness

The BCC Wellness Center hosts a Mental Health Summit annually, and this year, it was held in collaboration with the Peer-to-Peer Mental Health Ambassadors team for the first time. It took place on 24th March, Friday at the Student Lounge on the fifth floor of Berkeley City College. The keynote speaker was Nina G, who is a comedian and a professional speaker. She is also the author of Stutterer Interrupted and Bay Area Stand-Up Comedy: A Humorous History. The theme of the summit was conceived by our brilliant colleague, Aylin Navarrete.

Jasmine Buckley-Williams, Laura Savre, and James Toalu were all just named as 2023 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Community College Award Recipients. This recognition underscores the tremendous work of our PTK Chapter, and serves as a reminder of the outstanding scholarship/community service in which our students are engaged. The Community College League of California will honor these students in an official 2023 PTK Award Yearbook and celebrate their accomplishments on social media as well.
