Merritt College Partners with Oakland Housing Authority

As part of Merritt Colleges new partnership with the Oakland Housing Authority, on April 4^th the Outreach team visited the Lockwood Gardens Housing Village (located at 66^th Avenue and International Boulevard) to support our young people participating in a national Esports tournament for Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assisted students. The overarching goal of our collaboration is to support post-secondary education into our technology and cybersecurity pathways.

Merritt is pleased to congratulate three of our amazing Merritt Students! Jasmine Buckley-Williams, Laura Savre, and James Toalu were all just named as 2023 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Community College Award Recipients. This recognition underscores the tremendous work of our PTK Chapter, and serves as a reminder of the outstanding scholarship/community service in which our students are engaged. The Community College League of California will honor these students in an official 2023 PTK Award Yearbook and celebrate their accomplishments on social media as well.

Merritt College Hosts Clean Slate/Record Expungement Event

On Friday, March 24, our Street Scholars Program sponsored a Clean Slate/Record Expungement event for our students and community members. The program was held at the Love/Moss Center in partnership with The Access Project (TAP), whose mission is to complement and support the work of nonprofit organizations around the state by reimagining the relationship between the pro bono and legal services communities.

Merritt Colleges wishes to extend a hearty congratulations to two of our faculty members who just achieved a significant milestone. Sun Young Ban (Math) and Alejandro Garcia will be awarded tenure, having demonstrated their teaching acumen in the classroom, as well as their service to the College.

The Peralta Community College District, Laney College Student Activities and Campus Life, and Laney College's GSA Club are partnering to host the Lavender Graduation Ceremony at Laney College Theater Auditorium at 3 pm on Friday, May 5th, 2023.

Merritt College Meets Quilters of Gee's Bend, Alabama

On March 4th Merritt College and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center were pleased to welcome the Quilters of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Their presentation was held at the Oakland Marriott and was part of the Barbara Lee and Elihu Harris Lecture series. It focused on the art of quilting as a conduit of African American culture, collective memory, and civic engagement.

February at Merritt College

February was truly a month of cultural celebration! On February 7, more than 70 students, classified staff members, faculty, and administrators attended Merritt’s Lunar New Year Luncheon. In addition to the amazing cuisine, those in attendance enjoyed a screening of the documentary Beijing: The Traditions of the Chinese New Year, which provided insight into the rich history and customs that make up the tapestry of the celebration.

Having completed the necessary requirements through Merritt College’s Administration of Justice program, nineteen cadets graduated on Friday, February 3, as part of the Oakland Police Department’s 190^th Academy. Our ADJUS 110—Basic Course provides Peace Operations Specialized Training (POST) certification to students, which is the training standard for police officers, sheriffs, and other peace officers.

Merritt Child Development Center Groundbreaking

On Wednesday, February 1, Merritt College held the Child Development Center Groundbreaking to mark the first day of construction for our amazing new building. In partnership with the PCCD Department of General Services, the event allowed for our district and community leaders to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion.
