Exciting things are always happening at the Peralta Colleges. For the past year, most of these exciting things have been "virtual" but that is starting to change. On March 31, 2021, the women of the Laney College Water Polo team hosted a scrimmage against Las Positas College. This scrimmage was the first Peralta Sports Event since the Alameda County sheltering in place order began to protect us from the spread of COVID-19.
Welcome Dr. Jannett Jackson as Interim Chancellor

On April 16, 2021, Dr. Jannett Jackson started in her new role as Interim Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District. Dr. Jackson is an experienced CEO having served as the esteemed Chancellor of the Chabot-Los Positas Community College District from 2013 to 2018 when she retired, and most recently coming out of retirement to serve as Interim President of Skyline Community College in San Bruno in 2019-2020. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the Interim Chancellor contract for Dr. Jackson at their April 13, 2021 meeting.
Leadership Statement on the George Floyd Murder Trial

Dear Peralta Community,
Today, the jury trial for the murder of George Floyd concluded. In this case, the jury has found Derek Chauvin to be guilty of the charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
While this particular case has reached a conclusion, we want to acknowledge that pain and anguish of racism and violence against people of color persist. Our work to fight systemic racism, to create and foster social justice, continues.
Peralta Colleges Foundation March Madness raises $30,000 for Students

On Thursday, March 25, 2021, the Peralta Colleges Foundation held a virtual event and auction March Madness: Race Toward Building Careers. The incredibly successful event raised $30,000 to be used for student scholarships.

Laney College Stands with the AAPI Community
Laney College President Rudy Besikof was invited to speak at the March 27, 2021 Rally Against Asian Hate in Oakland Chinatown by the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, along with five chambers of commerce including the African American Chamber, Vietnamese Chamber, Hispanic Chamber, Metropolitan Chamber and Shop Oakland, the Oakland A's and East Bay MUD. Addressing the more than 150 participants and major news media including NBC, KPIX and KTVU, President Besikof echoed Mayor Libby Schaaf, Councilwoman Sheng Thao and other speakers in denouncing hate and calling for unity. APASS Director Dr. David Lee spoke to Chinese-language reporters about new opportunities available to AAPI and ESOL Laney students made possible by a recent $1.5 million Department of Education CTE-focused grant. The event was part of historic Anti-Asian American hate rallies, which took place all over the United States.

Congratulations to the hardworking journalists at The Peralta Citizen. Their efforts to keep our community informed from a student perspective have not gone unnoticed. The Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) recognized The Citizen during their statewide conference on Saturday, March 20, 2021. Among their many recognitions, The Citizen staff took home two meritorious awards in the Enterprise News Story/Series category, two honorable mentions for Profile Feature Story and placed fourth in the Video Journalism category.
