Berkeley City College Celebrates Latinx Heritage Month – October 12-14, 2021

In full espiritu, corazon and cariño, in full spirit, heart and affection – BCC celebrated Latinx Heritage month with an Opening Celebration in the Atrium at Berkeley City College (and by Zoom) where BCC President Garcia opened the week-long celebration. 

Merritt College Home of the Black Panthers

This October marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and as Merritt College played a significant role in the Party’s historical origins, we proudly took part in the celebrations to commemorate the occasion. On Friday, October 15, 2021, students, staff, and community members revisited last year’s conversation about the legacy of the Party. 

College of Alameda’s Career Center Is Going Above and Beyond

Even while CoA’s Career and Employment Center campus location has been closed these past months during the pandemic, Career Center staff have made extraordinary efforts to continue to support clients by providing important resources and services to many in our community who were affected by the pandemic.

Laney CTE Summer Institute

Laney College is proud to have concluded another successful Career and Technical Education (CTE) Summer Institute last week, which hosted 144 high school students from districts within our service area.  The six-week program was designed to give prospective students a look into Laney’s CTE programs and campus resources that will help them achieve their goals.

The Sky Is the Limit: CoA’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Program

CoA’s Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) Program serves students seeking employment as trained technicians in the aviation industry. The program operates under the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and is located in a facility at 970 Harbor Bay Parkway, in Alameda, adjacent to the Oakland International Airport. Facilities include a sheet metal shop, an engine shop, welding equipment, and aircraft system trainers.

Merritt College:  Guided Pathways

Given its efficacy as a nationally recognized, evidence-based student success strategy, Merritt College adopted Guided Pathways as an integral component of attaining the college’s institutional mission. One of the signature goals of Guided Pathways is to provide students with clear guidelines and touch points for entering college, navigating program/degree requirements, and connecting majors with tangible career pathways. 

Laney College Partners with Schnitzer Steel Industries

Laney is excited to announce that the college has formed a partnership with Schnitzer Steel Industries, a metal recycling firm based in Oakland. During the three-year partnership, Schnitzer Steel guarantees an annual financial sponsorship dedicated to support Laney College’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. O

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) is the only national, nonprofit association with a primary focus on information dissemination, professional development, and legislative and regulatory analysis related to federal student aid programs.

College of Alameda’s Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) is in the process of transitioning webpages, documents, and materials to reflect its new name: Student Accessibility Services (SAS).

Outreach, Recruitment & Enrollment representatives from Laney College, along with some of their student support groups and learning communities, met with Oakland Unified School District representatives from nine of their high schools, as well as some of their central staff on March 11. Staff from each school was a mix of counselors, work-based learning coordinators, transition specialists, and college/career specialists, as well as a few outside college access partners.
