Merritt Child Development Center Groundbreaking
On Wednesday, February 1, Merritt College held the Child Development Center Groundbreaking to mark the first day of construction for our amazing new building. In partnership with the PCCD Department of General Services, the event allowed for our district and community leaders to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion.
In an April issue of Gems, it was announced that the Peralta Colleges Foundation in partnership with The PepsiCo Foundation launched the Uplift Scholarship program to support our most underserved students of The Peralta Colleges, who are pursuing two-year degrees and professional certificate programs. In addition, to financial assistance, the program provides students with dedicated success coaches, access to emergency grants, and financial literacy courses. The PepsiCo Foundation’s Uplift Scholarship is currently offered at 20 community colleges across the country with the goal of providing 4,000 scholarships over five years. What’s more, the PepsiCo Foundation's Community College Program is a cornerstone effort of PepsiCo's more than $570 million Racial Equality Journey, a comprehensive initiative to support marginalized and historically underserved communities, people, and businesses.
In honor of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, the Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee, COA Ethnic Studies, and the Office of the President would like to encourage everyone to participate in all activities and celebration of the culture, achievements, traditions, contributions, and struggles of Latinx/Hispanic people in the U.S. and beyond.
Laney Mourns the Loss of Cosmetology Instructor
Laney Professor Helen Curry passed away on Tuesday, November 16, while in the care of her family. To honor her memory, the members of the Laney College Council dedicated its meeting of November 17 meeting to her name and enduring legacy, and a Celebration of Life event was held for her on December 14 in the afternoon.
Merritt College Care Team
Merritt College is pleased to share that it has established a CARE team at the campus. Conceived of as a behavioral intervention initiative at many colleges across the country, the Merritt College CARE Team is committed to going beyond merely responding to reports of at-risk students displaying varying levels of disruptive, disturbed and/or distressed behaviors.
BCC: Helping Our Community Through the Holidays
Just before the holiday break, Berkeley City College collaborated with the Berkeley Food Network in providing food to students for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We gave away free frozen chickens, pumpkin puree, beans, stuffing, canned fruit, rice, and other goodies! Many of the students who came to pick up food expressed their gratitude for helping them have a meal during the November holiday break. What a wonderful way to put a smile on someone’s face!
ASLC and The Latinx Cultural Center celebrated Latinx/Hispanic Heritage
Beginning 10/11, the ASLC and Latinx Cultural Center celebrated Latinx/Hispanic Heritage month with three days of activities.
COA Innovative HyFlex Data Coaching & Equitable Scheduling Retreat
Fifty-nine College of Alameda faculty, classified professionals, students, and administrators gathered for the College’s first hybrid flexible (HyFlex) event since the start of the pandemic. The event was held over two half day sessions on October 7 and 8, 2021. Titled Just in Time Data Coaching and Equitable Scheduling Retreat, the innovative event focused on data literacy, improving the scheduling process, and aligning planning with both institutional and district goals. Twenty participants attended in-person, adhering to the District’s masking and social distancing Covid-19 safety guidelines, and 39 individuals joined virtually using Zoom.
