On Monday, December 6, 2021, the Peralta Colleges Foundation revived its annual golf tournament and this year titled the tournament after Peralta’s long serving retired board trustee Dr. William “Bill” Riley.
The Dr. William “Bill” Riley Swing Fore Student Success Golf Tournament was held at the private Sequoyah Country Club in the East Oakland Hills. The event raised well over $100,000 to support the work of the foundation’s small, but mighty staff to continue administering student scholarships and aid, grants and fiscal management for the district’s four colleges – Laney College, Merritt College, College of Alameda and Berkeley City College.
With close to 130 golfers, special guests in attendance included Assemblymember Mia Bonta, Peralta Community College District Trustees Linda Handy and Kevin Jenkins, and the college presidents including Dr. Angélica Garcia (Berkeley City College), Dr. Rudy Besikof (Laney College) and Dr. David M. Johnson (Merritt College).
Event sponsors included Schnitzer Steel, Seibert, Williams, Shank LLC, Port of Oakland, NetExperts, Oakland Roots, Noll and Tam, Roebbelen, Comcast, Square to name a few.
Golfers competed for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place slots. Tournament contests include the hole-in-one, putting, closest-to-pin and longest drive. Winners received trophies, golf course gift certificates for foursomes, Southwest Airlines tickets and more! Golfers also enjoyed complimentary breakfast and beverages on the course, a post golf reception including dinner and a gift bag filled with an array of golf swag.
Established in 1971, the foundation’s aim is to support the intellectual, cultural and educational needs of our students, faculty and staff throughout the Peralta Colleges. Funds raised at the tournament help elevate students from poverty, train the unemployed and underemployed and prepare students to successfully transition to four-year universities.
