Merritt College Addresses Student Enrollment
On Wednesday, February 15, Merritt convened a joint Strategic Enrollment Management/Educational Master Planning Task Force meeting to examine and address some of the prevailing and persistent challenges we face in terms of the recruitment and retention of students. We recognize that COVID-19 has had an obvious impact on our enrollment numbers and the way our institution will need to function going forward (including devoting more attention and resources to support the mental health of our students). But we also concede that some of the challenges were endemic even before the pandemic. It is important for us to acknowledge troubling issues if we ever hope to surmount them… we cannot skip that critical step. With that said, a few of the areas that we will address are:

Student Accessibility Services at Laney College!
Laney College’s Student Accessibility Services (SAS, formerly DSPS) goes that extra mile to help students in need of accommodations to support their learning experience! Along with testing accommodations, notetaking, and other support, students have also been able to get real-time support through Campus Solutions using the Accessibility Information Management (AIM) module. Laney welcomes Chelsey Young, who will be helping students with their approved testing accommodations for online and face-to-face classes. Students may contact her at LaneySASassessment@peralta.edu.

Honoring Our Diverse Traditions: Lunar New Year and Black History Month at College of Alameda
February 2022 marked the College’s celebration of two important traditions: Lunar New Year and Black History Month. In celebration of Black History Month, I encouraged the CoA family to envision our roles as contributors to and facilitators of life-transforming education that leads to among other things, greater health and well-being of our students. This year's theme for Black History Month is "Black Health and Wellness." As a former Health Policy professor, I was always very interested in social determinants of health and health economics. The COVID-19 pandemic has served as the most recent spotlight for the widespread disparity in access to quality healthcare resulting in statistically significant poorer outcomes for Blacks and other minorities. Because higher education has been positively correlated with improved economic and health status measures, I shared the article: Racism, Inequality, and Health Care for African Americans with our College community to encourage meaningful dialogue about this topic. I believe that the work that we do every day as educators has great importance and significance. Hence, we must continue to fight the good fight for greater access to education and improved health equity.

I would like to begin by acknowledging the collective efforts of the faculty, classified professional staff, and administrators to make the first few weeks of the semester (particularly the on-campus instruction and delivery of in-person student services) more successful than many had anticipated.
