Merritt College and Oakland Promise Co-Host Event

Merritt is excited to announce that Oakland Promise and Merritt College are co-hosting a Student Resource Day on Tuesday, August 2nd from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Oakland Promise is an organization that emerged from a commitment by residents in 2016 to provide every child in our city with the support, coaching, and incentives needed to succeed from the cradle to college and career achievement.

Laney Launches Fall is Free Campaign to Cover Most College Costs

On July 12, Laney College officially launched its Fall is Free campaign, which covers the cost of tuition, textbooks, bus passes, WiFi hot spots, lunch, and more for students who complete their FAFSA application for financial aid.

“BCC in the Community” Outreach Launch

Berkeley City College launched the BCC in the Community outreach effort the week of July 11. BCC President Angélica Garcia, Student Ambassador Noel Arikew, Outreach Coordinator Gail Pendleton, Dr. Martin De Mucha Flores, and Public Information Officer Tom Rizza, visited 5 BCC students at their homes and workplaces.

Guided Pathways Retreat Charts an Inclusive Path Forward to Greater Student Success and Fiscal Stewardship

On July 7, 2022, CoA Guided Pathways members, Deans, Vice Presidents, and the College President met with facilitators for a half-day retreat charting the next phase of Guided Pathways (GP) work.

The California Association of Black School Educators (CABSE) presented the Peralta Community College District with their Black EdCellence Award for community colleges during their 2nd Annual CABSE Institute in Napa, held July 10-13, 2022.  The Black EdCellence Award recognized the Peralta Colleges for "groundbreaking leadership in advancing education equity for Black Students."

Berkeley City College Visual Arts Student Wins Berkeley PSA Art Contest

Berkeley City College Visual Arts student Jerry Hsiao won first prize in the BCC Art Contest sponsored by the BCC Public Health Club, and funded by the Community Health Education Institute and the City of Berkeley. Club members focus on sugar-sweetened beverage education on the health hazards of sugar, advocacy, and art contests through grants from the Sugar-Sweetened Beverage tax from the City of Berkeley.

Merritt College Enrollment

Merritt’s fall 2022 enrollment projection is encouraging. With more than six weeks before the fall semester begins, Merritt is at 43.8% of its FTES target. In order to further bolster enrollment, we are researching how we can best support our students.

40% of Laney CalWorks Students Make Honor Roll

Graduation may be over, but Laney faculty, staff, and administrators are still celebrating the student success that was cultivated during the spring semester. CalWorks Program Coordinator, Cynthia Alvarado, boasted a big smile when she informed the Public Information Office that 40% of her students made the honor roll, which is a major increase from the typical one to two students.
