We have more exciting news from Women’s History Month in March, this time focusing on honors for Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson.

Oakland's Acting Mayor Kevin Jenkins, a former Trustee and proud graduate of the College of Alameda, has shown his deep regard for the Peralta Colleges' work. Chancellor Gilkerson was "truly honored" to receive a Mayor's Proclamation recognizing her as a 2025 Women's History Month Honoree. The proclamation stated, "Whereas, as Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District, she continues to champion access to higher education, workforce development, and strategic partnerships that uplift Oakland and the broader East Bay.” Dr. Gilkerson shared this recognition with the entire district, emphasizing, "That’s what we do, together. So thank you, Mayor Jenkins, for this recognition."

Dr. Gilkerson had the pleasure of attending a Golden State Warriors basketball game alongside Mayor Jenkins and City of Oakland Deputy Mayors LaNiece Jones and Burt Jones. During halftime, she was honored with the "Impact Warrior Award" by Mayor Jenkins and PG&E Government Affairs Manager Sarah Yoell. They described her as "a passionate advocate for transformative statewide initiatives that prioritize the needs of students and promote accessible education. Her unwavering commitment to equity and social justice has driven impactful leadership within the East Bay community.”

While Dr. Gilkerson admitted that "getting the jersey was pretty cool," she humorously noted her unsuccessful attempt to join the game, stating, "I said ‘Put me in, Coach Kerr’ but I don’t think he heard me."
