Laney Career & Technical Education Hosts In-Person Career Expo

On Saturday, April 23, Laney College’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) team hosted its 10th-annual Career Expo and Open House with about 375 guests in attendance. This half-day event helped prospective students explore the campus, CTE departments, as well as student services including: registration, counseling, financial aid services, and Laney’s wonderful learning communities. Attendees were able to visit over 21 departments and gain real-life experience by participating in workshops, demos, tours, and hands-on activities.

The Oaklandside Welcomes Laney Journalism Students for Summer Internships

Starting this summer, The Oaklandside will be welcoming Laney journalism student and former Citizen Editor-in-Chief Luke Wrin Piper for a 10-week, full-time reporting internship. This “Lede Reporter in Residence” will join The Oaklandside newsroom full-time for 10 weeks, learning from and working side-by-side with our award-winning team of reporters and editors.

Laney College Hosts 100 Black Men Career Expo Event

On Saturday, April 30, the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area organization held its first Career Expo Event at Laney College. The day began with welcoming and keynote remarks from Joseph Frank of Wells Fargo, Julius Robinson of Union Bank, Dorian Giles (Personal Brand Agent for Professional Athletes), and Laney College President Rudy Besikof.

Spring Fest 2.0 Highlighted by Large Campus, Student, Community Turnout

On March 16, Laney College held its second mid-semester One-Stop event, a hybrid gathering. After the initial modest turnout in the Fall, at least 200 students and prospective students took part to learn about programs and receive additional support, all while being treated to lunch served by the Food Services team and Laney College administrators. Attendees were greeted by celebratory balloons that were Beautifully Branded by Adina Meza. Working with the community, Laney welcomed students and staff from our OUSD partners at McClymonds and Metwest High Schools.

Student Accessibility Services at Laney College!

Laney College’s Student Accessibility Services (SAS, formerly DSPS) goes that extra mile to help students in need of accommodations to support their learning experience! Along with testing accommodations, notetaking, and other support, students have also been able to get real-time support through Campus Solutions using the Accessibility Information Management (AIM) module. Laney welcomes Chelsey Young, who will be helping students with their approved testing accommodations for online and face-to-face classes. Students may contact her at LaneySASassessment@peralta.edu.

Laney College Awarded Grant to Continue Food Distribution to Students

Last week Laney learned it had been awarded a $44,600 grant from the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB). The application and subsequent award come thanks to the work of Alfred Brown, Food Services Supervisor; Atiya Rashada, Director of Student Activities and Campus Life; Gary Albury, Associate Dean of Student Success; and Amy Marshall, Laney Facilities and Campus Operations Director. Funding from this grant will support our food distribution operations and relocate our pantry facility.

Laney College LGBTQIA+ Community, Allies Host and Enjoy Halloween Event!
On October 27, the Lavender Project hosted its annual Laney Queers Fall Costume Tea Party for employees, students and allies across the District. The group was excited to reunite since on-campus events have been scarce due to the pandemic, with students from at least three of the four campuses in attendance.. The two-hour event took place at the Laney Bistro and via Zoom, with guests enjoying light refreshments and much needed interaction. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes, and the planning and hard work that went into the event was evident for all who attended.
