Peralta Receives California Association of Black School Educators Black EdCellence Award

The California Association of Black School Educators (CABSE) presented the Peralta Community College District with their Black EdCellence Award for community colleges during their 2nd Annual CABSE Institute in Napa, held July 10-13, 2022.  The Black EdCellence Award recognized the Peralta Colleges for "groundbreaking leadership in advancing education equity for Black Students."

Peralta Trustees Linda Handy and Kevin Jenkins attended the conference and received the award on behalf of PCCD.  The award was presented by Micah Ali, the founder of CABSE and conference chairman; Mr. Ali also serves as Board President of the Compton Unified School District.  Moreno Valley Unified School District received the Black EdCellence Award for K-12 schools. 

The California Association of Black School Educators (CABSE) is a non-partisan organization consisting of elected and appointed school officials, administrators and instructors from across California who are committed to advancing equity for Black students. CABSE members represent governmental agencies, charter schools and charter school organizations, public school districts, traditional public schools, and community colleges.

The CABSE Mission is to expand the PK-14 educational opportunities available to all students in California, with an emphasis on under-represented and under-served black students, by enacting policies that will strengthen student performance while bolstering opportunities for college and career readiness, to ensure competency and lifelong success.

CABSE leverages formal and informal partnerships and provides professional development to improve education practices, policy innovation and leadership development in the context of achieving equity in education for black students. The Annual CABSE Conference brings together educational leaders from across California for engaging and informative sessions designed to ignite change on behalf of students. This year's conference took place in Napa.  Kevin Jenkins currently serves as the President of CABSE.
