Peralta Gems #14

Apr 27, 2020 2:29:00 PM / by Mark Johnson

Monday, April 27, 2020

Greetings Peralta Community!  Welcome to issue #14 of Peralta Gems. We have been sheltering-in-place for 6 weeks now and it is working to "flatten the curve" and slow the spread of COVID-19. Here in the District, teaching and learning continues. Student services and counseling remain available online. What I am seeing across the Peralta Community is: You Got This. Students are adapting. Faculty are adapting. Staff and administrators are adapting. These times call on our best selves to be engaged, creative and to show up boldly for the community and we are all doing just that.  We Got This - Together. #PeraltaStrong. --Mark Johnson

Safe Peralta Website Launched for COVID-19 & Emergency Situation Updates

Safe Peralta website homepage

Safe Peralta is a new website created to provide information and facilitate communication during emergency situations such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. The site, created in-house by the District department of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations (MCPR), provides a status summary on the home page plus additional resources for students and employees. Students should visit https://safe.peralta.edu/covid19-student-resources for contact info for services that are now available online. An FAQ for students including support for online learning is available here: https://safe.peralta.edu/faq-for-students. Grade options are available here: https://safe.peralta.edu/grades. Faculty and Staff resources are available here with an employee FAQ here. Community resources about COVID-19 are available here.

The launch of the site was announced at the Student Town Hall meeting on April 1, 2020 (more on that event below). Mark Johnson, Interim Executive Director, MCPR, commented, "Thanks to community feedback, we realized that we needed a more robust website for communications about COVID-19 and other emergency situations we've had recently like the PG&E power shutdowns. Safe Peralta was built to be mobile-friendly and ADA compliant so that it's easy to read on a phone, tablet, or with an audio reader.  My thanks especially to Aaron Harbour, Interim Web Content Developer, for doing the bulk of the work to get this site launched." The site is still very much a work in progress and we welcome your suggestions and feedback. Please send suggestions to Mark Johnson at markjohnson@peralta.edu. Thank you!

Communication, Collaboration, and Community Tools Update

thinking about email

I've got something I want to communicate to my fellow employees.  What are my options?

You've got plenty of options.

You can also email your faculty or classified senate leadership or collective bargaining leadership to share something with your faculty or classified peers.  The district has created new distribution lists for the Classified Senates and Academic Senates and new distribution lists for each of the three Collective Bargaining Units, so leadership from each of these groups can effectively communicate with their constituents

You can use Yammer to post your message on the Yammer social network to potentially be read by all Peralta employees. A training session for Yammer was held on Friday, April 17.  You can see the slides presented here and a Zoom recording of that session here.

Another option is to use Microsoft Teams. A training sessions for Microsoft Teams was held on Friday April 24.  You can see the slides presented here and a Zoom recording of that session here.  Additionally, the Microsoft Teams quick start guide from Microsoft is available here

Rosie is helping Mark Johnson keep Safe Peralta up to date

The shelter-in-place directive to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus means people throughout the Bay Area, California, and across the nation are spending more time working from home. While the shift to working, teaching and learning remotely has been challenging, one benefit of staying home is that many of us are able to spend more time with our furry family members.
