Merritt College Open House

As part of the ongoing efforts to establish Merritt as the “Community’s College,” we are excited to host a Career Education Open House on Friday, April 29, 2022. In partnership with Oakland Unified School District and our other K-12 feeder Districts, we expect to welcome over 150 prospective Merritt students (high school juniors and seniors) to tour our campus throughout the day.

Berkeley City College’s First Annual Career Fair

Berkeley City College hosted its First Annual Career Fair on Thursday, April 7. The event was organized by Hispanic Serving Institution Director Verónica Montoya, Outreach Program Specialist Christine Trowbridge, and FDIP Counseling Intern Angelica Peña. The all-day event engaged students in creating career pathways and prepared them for life in the workforce.

Today, Peralta Colleges Foundation and The PepsiCo Foundation announced the launch of the Uplift Scholarship program to support our most underserved students of the Peralta Colleges consisting of Laney College, Merritt College, College of Alameda, and Berkeley City College, who are pursuing two-year degrees and professional certificate programs. In addition, to financial assistance, the program provides students with dedicated success coaches, access to emergency grants, and financial literacy courses.

It’s our pleasure to announce that Berkeley City College will be profiled in a forthcoming book titled The Community College: The Pursuit of Democracy, Economic Development, and Success by Robert L. Pura and Tara L. Parker (Stylus Publishing, AAC&U). The book examines the ways community colleges serve as a catalyst for social and economic mobility, fulfilling the promise to provide educational opportunities for all who seek it. The authors visited Berkeley City College, along with four other community colleges across the nation, to meet with faculty, staff, administrators, and students documenting ways their institutions are fighting for economic and social justice and democracy.

Spring Fest 2.0 Highlighted by Large Campus, Student, Community Turnout

On March 16, Laney College held its second mid-semester One-Stop event, a hybrid gathering. After the initial modest turnout in the Fall, at least 200 students and prospective students took part to learn about programs and receive additional support, all while being treated to lunch served by the Food Services team and Laney College administrators. Attendees were greeted by celebratory balloons that were Beautifully Branded by Adina Meza. Working with the community, Laney welcomed students and staff from our OUSD partners at McClymonds and Metwest High Schools.
