Laney College Engagement at Oakland Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade
Laney College classified professionals and administrators promoted the College and fostered goodwill for the Year of the Snake at the February 22 Lunar New Year Parade. The annual event is organized by the Oakland Chinatown Neighborhood Improvement Council and once again, colleagues devoted their Saturdays to answer questions at the College’s information table. At the start of the parade, President Besikof was introduced along with other dignitaries including Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins.
This event provided a valuable opportunity to connect with the community, and more than any other Oakland event, people made a point to ask about Laney College or share stories about family members who are currently attending. Special appreciation to David Lee and APASS staff members for their participation as well as Atiya Rashada, Director of Student Activities & Campus Life, for her leadership and support.

Laney Machine Tech Students Tour Astra’s Rocket Factory
On January 29, Laney College Machine Technology students had an incredible opportunity to visit Astra’s rocket factory in Alameda for a tour. They explored a range of advanced manufacturing processes, from manual machining to 5-axis prototyping and lights-out manufacturing, gaining firsthand insight into the cutting-edge world of aerospace production.
Astra serves as a prime example of modern, high-tech manufacturing, and notably, many of Astra’s machinists are formerly Laney students. Special thanks to Machine Technology Department Chair Adam Balogh for making this opportunity possible, and to the Astra team for their warm welcome and invaluable industry insights.
African American Quilt Guild of Oakland Exhibit Now on Display at Laney College Library
Throughout March, the Laney College Library is hosting an inspiring exhibit by the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland in celebration of Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
This collection of quilts goes beyond craftsmanship; it weaves together stories of resilience, history, and love, celebrating the powerful contributions of African American women to the art of quilting. Each quilt tells its own unique story, reflecting themes of cultural heritage, civil rights, and empowerment. The exhibit invites visitors to engage with the artistry of African American quilters, offering a deeper understanding of how these works preserve history and identity. It is a rich educational experience that highlights the intersection of art and social change. This powerful display not only honors the tradition of African American quilting but also promotes a broader understanding of cultural storytelling through art.
The College is proud to host this exhibit and looks forward to future opportunities to collaborate with cultural organizations to further enrich the learning experiences of our students and the community.
