OAKLAND, Calif., August 22, 2024 – Classes are still open at Laney College, where students can access a slew of resources that can support their ability to dream, flourish and succeed.
This fall, the college is offering rental Chromebooks to help bridge the digital divide, Clipper cards with AC Transit passes to assist with transportation and free parking for students who commute to campus. In addition, the college’s food pantry offers protein and produce boxes twice a week for qualifying students, and the newly established Eagles Nest closet provides clothing for students in need.
“Our campus has mobilized to support students who come to our college in order to pursue their dreams, and our offerings span well beyond the classroom,” Laney College President Dr. Rudy Besikof said. “As a beacon of the Oakland community, Laney College is once again providing resources that support the whole student. We know that lives change here, and we are thrilled to be a part of our students’ success.”
With many students qualifying for financial aid – and low-cost classes at just $46 a unit – success is well within reach for those who wish to pursue an associate’s degree, a professional certificate, or transfer to a four-year institution. To match multiple learning styles, the college offers online, hybrid, and in-person classes. In late September and mid-October, the college will offer an additional set of late-start, short-term classes, also offered in multiple modalities, that can easily fit into the schedules of busy professionals or those with caretaking and family obligations.
This year’s efforts represent a continuation of resources provided in the 2022 and 2023 “Free College” years at Laney, during which time the College enrolled 25% more students, awarded 30% more degrees and career placement/advancement certificates, and saw a 58% increase in Financial Aid applicants.
