A Milestone Achievement

The Transportation and Technology Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony marked a defining moment for the College of Alameda and the broader community. Over 70 attendees joined to celebrate this transformative facility for the Alameda community. The event drew significant attention, with Vicky Nguyen’s article in the Alameda Post, 'College of Alameda Celebrates New Transportation Technology Center,' republished by Newsbreak, reaching nearly 17 million readers. This milestone represents not only a state-of-the-art educational space but also a symbol of innovation and an opportunity for students pursuing transportation and technology careers. We thank our esteemed faculty, classified professionals, industry partners, and community for supporting the event. Extra special thanks to Board President Quinlen, Board Vice President Gonzalez Britto, Trustee Withrow, Chancellor Gilkerson, Deputy Chancellor Nelson, Professor Greenspan, Professor Norton, Candido Mejia, Dean Jennings, VP Porter, Alten Contracting, Robblen Construction, and supporters of the bond.

Planning in Motion: Program Review and Faculty Prioritization

Planning for Program Review and Faculty Hiring Prioritization is in full swing. Faculty and staff are deeply engaged in the review cycle that informs us of our instructional priorities and resource allocation. Key dates: October 20th for Program Review submissions and November 7th for all Program Review, Abbreviated Program Review, and/or APU Survey submissions. Templates and links are available on the Institutional Effectiveness webpage. We applaud faculty and staff for engaging in the continuous improvement process.

Re-Aligning Academic Divisions

The Division Realignment is underway, and faculty are currently submitting survey responses to help shape the two-division structure. Our shared governance process is the mechanism being used to decide on the instructional division structure. This process highlights our collective commitment to inclusion and collaborative decision-making. The timeline includes review at the Academic Senate (9/4), Department Chairs (9/9), IEC (9/11), College Council (9/24), and the Initial Faculty Survey (9/26). Upcoming milestones include the October 13th faculty survey deadline, the Mid-Semester Flex Day presentation on October 15th, and collegewide recommendations in November. The new structure will be formally announced during Spring Flex on January 16, 2026.

Setting the Standard in Closing Needs Gaps

College of Alameda’s Basic Needs Program was recently highlighted in an article by current student Cassandra 'Kasey' Hernandez. Her article, 'Tasty Tuesdays is Now Every Day at College of Alameda,' was published in the Peralta Gems and later picked up by the Alameda Post. The story was picked up nationally by Newsbreak (17.99M reach) and Patch (9.17M reach), spotlighting CoA’s laser focus on food insecurity. Serving as a model is not the intention of our efforts, but highlights the commitment to addressing food insecurity to ensure our students can Believe. Achieve. Succeed. at CoA. Our interest is that all students at all institutions show up to class in person or virtually, prepared to learn and not distracted by the effects of malnutrition or poor diet. Gratitude to Jeremy Simmons and the Basic Needs team, and congrats to Kasey for writing such an impactful piece.
