Congratulations are in order for College of Alameda which has been named a 2022 Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement in Black English Throughput by The Campaign for College Opportunity. The Campaign for College Opportunity describes itself as "focused on a single mission: Working to ensure all Californians have an equal opportunity to attend and succeed in college in order to build a vibrant workforce, economy and democracy." College of Alameda President Nathaniel Jones II noted 'the college is thankful for the recognition of the College of Alameda’s work to foster greater levels of achievement equity.'

The award celebrates colleges that have successfully supported at least 70% of Black students who enrolled in a transfer-level English course to successfully complete it within 1 year of their initial enrollment and have supported Black students to succeed at rates equivalent to or even exceeding those of the student body as whole.

College of Alameda Vice President of Instruction Dr. Diane Bajrami put it well:

"This is a result of the intentional and persistent work, as our English Department has been at the forefront of AB 705 implementation and instrumental in all learning communities for quite a long time.

"This is one of the departments that continuously and frequently engages in dialogue and pedagogy conversations to optimize educational opportunity by breaking down systemic inequities and designing innovative curriculum and holistic courses with embedded support. "

College of Alameda will be recognized at the inaugural award ceremony, Excellence in Placement: Honoring Community Colleges Excelling in Equitable Course Placement for Students, on Thursday, May 12, 2022, a special celebration attended by Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, and other California Community College honorees.
