Berkeley City College just announced that it has selected student Yanelit Madriz Zarate as this year's awardee of a $750 California Community College EOPS Association (CCCEOPSA) scholarship. A first generation Chicana student who is the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Zarate was selected as this year's recipient due to her outstanding commitment not only to her studies, but to her community.

“Since being accepted into EOPS, Yanelit has exhibited academic excellence and a strong commitment to learning," said Brenda Johnson, EOPS Director and Dean of Student Support Services. "She is a student advocate and member of several campus organizations, including the Undocumented Community Resource Center (UCRC), and Latinx Club, and has gone above and beyond to serve her community. It was an honor to recommend her as this year's Berkeley City College 2020 CCCEOPSA Scholarship recipient."

Upon being selected for the award, Zarate said, "Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity! I am truly so honored and thankful to be part of EOPS. You all helped me find a sense of belonging, community, and so much more at Berkeley City College and I am forever grateful.”

BCC offers a variety of resources to undocumented and LatinX students through the Undocumented Community Resource Center. There are also a variety of services offered for students of College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College.
