The Laney Football Team is coming off a tough season but that has not dampened the spirits of the new Head Coach nor the over 95 student-athletes participating in Spring workouts. Josh Ramos has stepped in as Laney Football’s new Head Coach, following the stellar tenure of legendary coach John Beam. The transition of a new head coach has been a smooth one as Coach Ramos has been primed and ready for this move and is keeping the bulk of the staff together. “This is not a rebuild,” Coach Ramos articulated, “We have been doing this at Laney for a long time and have lots of wins and rings.” The proof is in the pudding, as the enrollment numbers bear out. With the bulk of last year’s freshmen returning, a crop of new recruits, and another additional 40-50 newcomers in the summer, this year’s football team will be filling up the scoreboards and the classrooms.
The Ramos Era begins with a new mantra, "Wings Wide and Talons Out!" This speaks to the football program's belief in a family atmosphere and an attitude of toughness. As Coach Ramos puts it, “We want an environment that brings people together like a family and that means also protecting and defending each other like family.” This atmosphere and attitude can be seen in the large enrollment numbers and the effort being put out on the athletic fields, weight rooms, and classrooms. The football team's workouts run Monday through Thursday, from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm, and include speed and conditioning training, weight training, and football philosophy and tactics.
While the enrollment numbers are high, the Eagles Nest still has room for more. Anyone interested in joining the football program come down to the Athletic Fieldhouse, Monday-Thursday between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm. Along with this mass of student-athletes, the message of togetherness and toughness will spread through campus, clutching hearts and binding us together in an unbreakable bond. Let’s all promote an atmosphere and attitude of taking care of each other and having the fortitude to push through adversity. . . or to put it another way, Wings Wide and Talons Out!
