Berkeley City College is honored to share that Lissette Flores is joining our community as the new Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Director. Prior to joining BCC, Lissette served as the Associate Director for the Latinx Center of Excellence in Behavioral Health at the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare. There, she managed a federal grant to recruit and train undergraduate and graduate Latinx students dedicated to serving the behavioral health needs of Latinx communities in the Bay Area. A community college transfer student, Lissette received her bachelor’s degree in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley and her Master’s in Public Health from UCLA. Supporting the academic and professional development of underrepresented students is the common thread in all of Lissette’s professional work. She is overjoyed to be working at BCC.

“It was exciting to see our scholars reconnecting after the long winter break,” said Umoja counselor Shannon Penn. “Lots of hugs, warm greetings, and some words of advice shared by scholars that are launching their last semester at BCC before transfer.”

ACCJC Reaffirms Berkeley City College’s Accreditation

Berkeley City College is proud to announce that on Thursday, January 26, President Angélica Garcia received communication from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC, or the Commission) reaffirming accreditation for Berkeley City College and its sister colleges in the Peralta Community College District.

Berkeley City College is excited to announce Dr. Joya Chavarin, EdD as BCC’s newest tenure track Education Instructor. Chavarin is the first full-time faculty hired in the Education Program at BCC.

Berkeley City College President Dr. Angélica Garcia was profiled and featured on the cover of the December issue of The Hispanic Outlook on Education magazine. The profile, titled “Dr. Angélica Garcia: A Commitment to Student Access and Success at Berkeley City College,” focuses on President Garcia’s commitment to student access and success, which frames how she leads the college. She describes access as “more than just getting students through the door.”

Berkeley City College congratulates former BCC Animation student Logan Wong for winning an Emmy in the “Outstanding Graphic Design – Specialty” category at the 2022 Sports Emmy awards. Wong was recognized for his work on “The Portal,” an animated series produced by Bleacher Report.

Spring to Success at BCC: Enrollment and Persistence Update

Berkeley City College’s Spring to Success program is building upon the success of Fall is Free with added benefits for students and a focus on persistence from semester to semester. BCC’s planned goals for the Spring semester are to increase persistence by 10% through outreach to Black, Latino/a/x, and AAPI populations, increase FTES through marketing campaigns designed with new and continuing students, and increase FAFSA completion for 2023-24.

Dear Peralta Community,

Welcome to the Spring 2023 semester. Today should be a day of celebration for students returning to our colleges’ to continue their educational goals and to avail themselves of our outstanding instruction and support services. Today should also be an opportunity for us to celebrate the Lunar New Year – the Year of the Rabbit. And we do celebrate these events!

But this week, we also fly our flags at half-staff at the campuses in solidarity with US President Joe Biden and our federal government, in memory of the lives lost and people injured at the tragic shooting yesterday at Monterey Park in southern California.
