Merritt College: Welcome Jorge Murillo, Director of Hispanic Serving Institutions Program

Good morning, Merritt Community.

I am writing with great news to share! I am pleased to announce that Mr. Jorge Murillo is our new Director of Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program (HSI Director). Now that he has had a few days to settle in, I encourage you to reach out and/or stop by his office to give him a warm Merritt College welcome! We are working with the District to create his email address, but in the meantime, he can be reached at aspira.merritt@peralta.edu. His office is R-113G.

Here is a little more about him:

Jorge is a South San Francisco native and a proud former community college transfer student. Prior to joining Merritt, he served as the Program Analyst for two consecutive Title III Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)-STEM Grants at Mission College in the South Bay. In his role, Jorge led the design and implementation of grant activities including a STEM Peer Mentorship Program, STEM Summer Research, STEM Career Readiness, and STEMvenída (like Bienvenída), an onboarding event for Latina/o/x STEM majors and their families. Additionally, Jorge oversaw the STEM Learning Center, co-led the implementation of the Caring Campus Initiative, served as the Tri-Chair for the Strategic Enrollment & Educational Master Plan Committee, and was a Classified Senator.

Before joining Mission College in February 2020, Jorge served as the Program Coordinator for EOPS/CARE & CalWORKs at Skyline College and the Program Analyst for the CalWORKs Training & Education Program at the City College of San Francisco, respectively. Jorge started his career in higher education first as a Student Ambassador at Skyline College where he conducted college and financial aid outreach, and later as the High School Outreach Coordinator in the Student Recruitment and Retention Center (SRRC) at UC Davis.

Jorge holds an Associate of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Skyline College, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from UC Davis, and is in his final year of pursuing a Master of Arts in Organization & Leadership from the University of San Francisco. When he’s not at work or school, Jorge enjoys spending time with his partner, friends, family, and his cats, Luke and Cleo.
Bienvenido, Jorge!
