Merritt College President's Report

Merritt BoT Board Report 06 28 22

Merritt College Pre-Collegiate Academy

Merritt College is excited to welcome back to our campus the Pre-Collegiate Academy. In 1991, the East Bay Consortium, in collaboration with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and Merritt College, instituted the Pre-Collegiate Academy (PCA), as a program specifically designed for students in Oakland middle and secondary schools. The PCA was established to remedy the growing number of students from low socio-economic backgrounds who were not qualifying for admission to higher educational institutions.

As such, the PCA aims to increase the numbers by strengthening students’ mathematical skills through summer enrichment courses and support services offered during the academic year. Merritt College has two administrators serving on the Board of Directors for the East Bay Consortium: Dr. Lilia Chavez, Vice President of Student Services, and Ree'shemah Thornton, Dean of Enrollment Services. Merritt is so pleased that this partnership is back to hosting these students on campus!

Merritt College Establishes Partnership with Black Girls in Blazers, Inc

Maria Spencer, the Merritt College Outreach Lead, has established a partnership between the college and Black Girls in Blazers, Inc. Founded by Ms. Felicia Harris, the organization is committed to offering young African American women practical solutions to everyday challenges. Understanding that Black girls are often stereotyped as being loud, overbearing, and hyper-sexualized, Black Girls in Blazers is committed to countering this narrative by providing opportunities for professional and personal development, while emphasizing the importance of self-confidence and accountability. Specifically, the collaboration will include creating an academic pathway to Merritt for all the participants in the program through customized dual enrollment classes. In addition, Merritt College will launch a College Expo that will showcase career education programs for its members. Finally, Merritt will work with the organization through the NextUp Program to provide support services to their foster youth.
