On May 22, 2025, Merritt College held its commencement ceremony at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2025. The ceremony was filled with inspiring speeches and heartfelt congratulations.
Merritt College President Dr. David M. Johnson expressed his pride in the graduates. "It makes me incredibly proud to see so many students improving their lives through the power of education. You earned it."
PCCD Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson encouraged graduates to embrace their journey. "Today is an example of what went right! Let's celebrate it!"
Student speakers also shared their experiences. Davina Malbrough, the president of the Associated Students of Merritt College, urged her peers to share their stories: "Please inspire someone else and shed light on your journey. You never know who you inspire."
Valedictorian Aniya Jones shared her future aspirations: "I will become a lawyer, and eventually I'll enter public service, or maybe even the Oval Office!" She emphasized the importance of education as a tool for change.
Salutatorian Odalis Lopez shared a powerful story of resilience and perseverance: "To all of us, class of 2025, continue pushing forward, continue breaking stereotypes, and continue fighting for your dreams."
The ceremony also included a land acknowledgement by Marquel De La Cruz and a performance of the national anthem by Chioma Nwachukwu. Assemblymember Mia Bonta delivered an inspiring keynote address, connecting the graduates to a legacy of change-makers and urging them to shape a future with justice and peace.
