Laney Eagles Flock to the Podium; Headed to NorCal Championships

Laney College hosted the 2024 Coast Conference Track & Field Championship this past Saturday, competing for a chance to advance to the Northern California Championships on May 3rd & 4th. The Eagles had several impressive performances, walking away with medals in several events.

Steeple Chase Podium

The day began with freshmen Emily Wonsang and Maria Ramirez medaling in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Wonsang finished in 3rd with a time of 14:07.30, breaking her previously held school record, and Ramirez finished in 4th with a time of 15:12.49. Both are advancing to the Northern California Championships.

Discus Podium-1

Sophomore throwers Jada Joshua and Jack Beltran moved up in the state rankings with their performances in discus. Joshua opened with a 38.20m attempt, which placed her 3rd overall. On her final attempt, Beltran broke Joshua’s previously held school record, throwing the discus 38.93m, placing her 2nd overall in the conference.

Shot Put Podium-1

Joshua’s day was not over, as she continued with an impressive performance in the shot put. Joshua hit a personal best 11.28m in her first attempt, placing her 5th overall in the conference. Sophomore thrower Tupu Ve’e defended her Coast Conference title in shot put winning the event for the second year in a row. Ve’e finished in 1st with an attempt of 12.56m. She is currently 2nd in the state for shot put.

The Eagles' next competition will be at the Northern California Championship at American River College on May 3rd and 4th, where they will be competing to advance to the CCCAA State Championship Meet.
