Laney BoT Report 10 25 22Laney College, OUSD, City of Oakland Collaborate for October 6 Manufacturing Day Event

In partnership with OUSD, the City of Oakland’s Economic Development Dept, Laney helped organize a full day of activities for the high school students as they got a first-hand look at industry partners and our great campus.

The day started early for these students, as they left their high school campuses to tour 8 Oakland manufacturing partners to Laney that included Mettler-Toledo Rainin LLC, Mighty Buildings Inc, Everett Graphics, ERG Materials and Aerospace, The Crucible, Doer Marine Operations, Kairos Energy, and Creative Wood. The group (pictured below, along with the logos of our industry partners) then came to Laney, where they were treated to lunch, took a campus tour, and attended talks from Laney’s Bio-manufacturing, Carpentry, Electrical, FabLab, Industrial Maintenance, Machine Shop, Welding and Wood Technology department.

Many thanks go to the team at Laney, our great industry partners, and our colleagues in education at our partner high schools that participated in the event. They include:

  • Oakland Tech
  • McClymonds
  • Skyline
  • Fremont
  • Oakland High
  • Castlemont
  • Madison Park Academy

Transfer Day Event Helps Students with their Next Step

Laney College Transfer Day was held on Oct. 10, 2022, from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM on the College Quad. There were 38 colleges/universities in attendance who provided valuable information and support to the 75-80 students who joined the event.

Students met individually with university admissions representatives learn more about the transfer process. Laney’s faculty, staff and administrators also came out in large numbers and many students mentioned in the post-event evaluation that they found Transfer Day to be helpful. Specifically, they reported that information provided to them by the four-year representatives will assist them in transferring and choosing which university to transfer to.

Lastly, based on the evaluation provided to the four-year representatives, all the reps appreciated the hospitality provided by Laney College. Special thanks to Transfer Center Counselor Cynthia Taing (pictured above with Counseling colleague Liliana Moncada, who played a large role as well in the October 20 Undocu-Student Resource Fair), Program Specialist Laura Ramos, and Dean Diane Chang for coordinating this event.
