Laney Shares Free College Success Stories with Partners at Oakland Rotary
One of the chief collaborative partners of Laney College has been a member of Oakland Rotary #3, who come to the Tiny Home Ribbon Cutting & Advanced Manufacturing Showcase. On behalf of Laney's Carpentry program, the College invites the community to our Tiny Home ribbon-cutting ceremony which will be held on Wednesday, October 11th 5:00pm at Laney College’s Construction Canopy. Embedded into its curriculum, Laney’s Carpentry program has been designing and building 200 square feet (about twice the area of an apartment bedroom) tiny homes which are designed to be energy efficient and provide a unique living experience for their occupants. This project is seen by the students as their contribution to solving housing insecurity in our communities.
The tiny homes are usually built in partnership with a nonprofit organization that provides the materials for the tiny homes. The current tiny home will be delivered to the Shelterwood Project, which is a BIPOC, Disabled, and Queer-led community forest and retreat center, healing people and ecosystems through active stewardship and community engagement. The Shelterwood Collective was co-founded by Layel Carmargo, who is a former Laney College Carpentry student.
We hope to see you there!
Laney Cosmetology: The Town Salon Grand Re-Opening
After nearly 3 years, Laney is proud to announce the grand re-opening of our Laney Cosmetology salon services. The Cosmetology program has been a fixture of the Laney campus and the larger Oakland community. Not only does it offer an opportunity for students to learn a trade and a pathway to a rewarding career in the beauty industry as a hairstylist, nail technician, or esthetician, but it also offers low-cost beauty services to the community. “Many of our clients are senior citizens who can't afford services in a traditional salon and have been anticipating the return of these services”, states department chairperson Thomas-Windham, who has been teaching in the department for 16 years.
The current students couldn’t be more excited, and preparation is underway to reopen the salon with a fresh new look and name, “The Town Salon @ Laney College”. Please join the Laney Cosmetology Department for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and refreshments on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 9:30 am.
We look forward to serving our community again!
