Lend a Hand Foundation Awards Scholarships to Laney College EOPS Students
The Lend A Hand Foundation (LAHF) has awarded $6,000 in scholarships to Laney NextUp/EOPS students. The organization has been in existence now for 24 years and is widely known for providing low income/at risk students with school supplies and more during the year. Ms. Dee Johnson, Founder and Executive Director, was a foster parent for 9 years, until she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Although she could no longer serve as a foster parent, she continued to serve her beloved Oakland community by establishing The Lend A Hand Foundation.

Laney Faculty and Staff Members Jam with New and Returning Students
Laney College continued their Area of Interest efforts by hosting the Area of Interest Jams the week of April 12-15. In some sessions, there were up to 25 students attending. Students were invited to learn about programs, meet with counselors, talk about potential careers and get a taste of cool classroom projects. Nearly half of students who attended the two hour-long events said they had yet to declare a major, and survey results emphasized how the jams helped students get more information about their passions and potential careers.

Global Artistic Ambassador Sam Villa Visit Laney Cosmo!'
Co-Founder of Sam Villa and Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken, Sam Villa, came to share his talent and love of teaching to the Laney College Cosmetology Zoom Room Tuesday, April 13th. With a full house of cosmo freshman and senior students from both day and evening programs, Sam spared no expense as he wowed and motivated both instructors and students alike for an hour with his styling, and foundational skills. He emphasized the planning and professional skills student need, behind the chair, to complete their program and become licensed.
Sam is a previous colleague of instructor, Miss Petra's Schontges , and offered a glimpse of the kind of exclusive monthly SkillsUp student training in cutting, styling, and finishing foundation education the department can expect as a Sam Villa partnership school.

Creating a Buzz About Summer, Fall & Face-to-Face Classes
The Laney PIO office has been busy working on driving traffic to our website, getting visibility for summer and fall classes, as well as collaborating with faculty and staff members to effectively promote our fall face-to-face classes. The Area of Interest social media campaign concluded with a reach of over 41,000 and 602 clicks to our classes webpage! While our summer and fall flipbooks are live, we have also collaborated with the district office to create a logo, which will be used on graphics highlighting face-to-face classes on web and social media. Many thanks to Chris Weidenbach for helping brainstorming this effort! We currently have print and digital ads running with The Daily Cal and The Pioneer.
