Laney College Celebrates the Lunar New Year!

Laney College recently rang in the Year of the Snake with a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration on January 30th, 2025. Organized by the Laney College APASS Program and emceed by program director Dr. David Lee, the event brought together students, faculty, and community members to honor this significant cultural occasion. The festivities offered a rich blend of music, performances, and community spirit, creating a memorable afternoon for all in attendance.

The celebration commenced with warm welcomes and an introduction to the Year of the Snake, followed by insights into Mongolian traditions, highlighting Laney's diverse student body. The college proudly acknowledged its active Mongolian student organization, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the rich cultural heritage within its community.

A highlight of the event was the captivating lion dance performance by the renowned Toishan Lion Dance Troupe. The rhythmic drumming and energetic movements of the lions filled the air, symbolizing good fortune and driving away negative energy, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The celebration was further enhanced by lively music, delicious food catered by Mint Leaf, and a strong sense of community. The sounds of traditional instruments and joyful cheers created an atmosphere of warmth and festivity, underscoring Laney's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where cultural traditions are shared. The enthusiastic participation of attendees solidified the event's success in bringing the community together.

Dr. Lee expressed deep gratitude to all who contributed to the event's success. Special thanks were extended to Huizhen "Joan" Su, APASS staff assistant, for her organizational prowess, and to Laney College counselor Lilian Chow for arranging singing performances from the Living Strong Club. Appreciation was also given to the APASS student ambassadors, the Laney IT team including William Jones, Dean Gary Albury, and the Laney custodial staff. The Laney College Lunar New Year celebration was a resounding success, reinforcing the college's commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening community bonds.
