College of Alameda Expands Basic Needs for Spring 2026

Mar 6, 2026 1:00:00 PM / by Kasey Hernandez

As students return to College of Alameda’s campus for the Spring 2026 semester, CoA is proud to spotlight the wide range of services that support students throughout their academic journeys. One program of particular significance is the Basic Needs program, which has recently expanded its offerings to better serve the campus community.

Tasty Tuesdays → Tasty Everyday

Last semester, Basic Needs partnered with Pacific Fine Food to offer students daily meals on campus. Previously, “Tasty Tuesdays” provided free food once a week, often resulting in long lines and limited availability.

In response to student feedback, the College is proud to announce the expansion of this program into a daily service — now offering tasty, healthy food options every weekday. This free meal program continues to serve hundreds of students throughout the academic year, whether by supplementing pantry staples or providing a boost between classes.

Students are welcome to visit the Cougar Den between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

  • Breakfast: 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (or until supplies last)

The Market

Another returning favorite for Spring 2026 is The Market, College of Alameda’s on-campus farmer’s market. Held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. behind the F-Building, The Market offers students access to fresh produce, shelf-stable milk, and canned goods — all at no cost.

With grocery prices continuing to rise and students balancing busy academic schedules, The Market serves as a convenient, “come-to-you” resource to help fill both pantry and plate. Students are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags; however, Basic Needs also provides complimentary College of Alameda Market tote bags while supplies last.

One Stop Shop and Market Access

In addition to The Market, students may visit the One Stop Shop in the F-Building, where they can browse essential items such as gently used clothing, hygiene products, and canned goods.

Because supplies are limited, item limits apply at both locations. A current, physical College of Alameda Student ID card must be presented and scanned to access services; student ID numbers or other forms of identification will not be accepted. This policy ensures equitable access for currently enrolled students.

Technology Access: WiFi Hotspots

Wi-Fi hotspots remain available for students enrolled in hybrid or fully online courses who lack stable internet access. Although hotspots are currently out of stock, students are encouraged to join the waitlist in anticipation of future availability. Priority is given to students enrolled in at least three (3) credits of online coursework.

New On-Campus Diaper Bank

A Diaper Bank is now available to support student parents, with supplies provided by the Supply Bank of Alameda County. Current student parents may apply by completing a short form indicating diaper sizes, address, and student information.

Supplies are limited each month, and households may receive up to two packs of diapers and baby wipes per month. Once applications are reviewed, students will be notified via email when items are ready for pickup, pending availability.

Student Assistance and Emergency Grants

Several grant opportunities are available to eligible students, with limited funding each semester:

Student Assistance Grants

Students must be enrolled in at least three (3) units, have College of Alameda as their home campus, and may receive a maximum of two grants per semester.

Emergency Grants (Returning for Spring 2026)

  • Emergency Aid Grant: For unexpected financial hardship
  • Emergency Housing Grant: For students experiencing a documented housing crisis
  • Emergency Food Grant: A one-time $300 Safeway gift card for groceries

    * Same eligibility requirements as Student Assistance Grants

    * Not available to high school enrollment students or students who have received this grant in prior semesters

College of Alameda remains committed to ensuring that students have access to the resources necessary to thrive both academically and personally. For additional information about Basic Needs services, students may contact Jeremy Simmons, Basic Needs Coordinator, at jsimmons@peralta.edu.
